Supercar runnoff at laguna this weekend
Just got word that a viper will be there too to add to the emence field shaping up for the SCCA ITE race this saturday and sunday april 2-3rd. race time is 1pm on sunday.
there will be a very fast M3 lightweight racer, a vet, camero, 2 porsche 928's!!, some mazdas, a mustang , a porsche PRC spec 911, and a turbo mitsubishi EVO 4x4 racer! (along with the viper that just signed up) 49 cars in the field, 20 cars in our ITE class.
Should be an awesome showcase for bang for the buck racers as most of the cars are still derivatives of stock production cars, with only minor mods (ie cams and headers, etc)
the 928 is 20 years old, oldest in the field and the M3s are 1995 . the vets and vipers are much newer and the 4x4 EVO is brand new!. ITE class is anything goes on DOTs! this is what production car racing is all about!
should be fun! let me know if any of you are going out to watch!

no TV for the regional races, but it should be a great race, reminisant of the old speedvision GT production racing, but actually better, as there are cloe to 50 cars 30 of which in a lesser class. kind of like ALMS but only 30 min long and much slower!
These two on the link below are coming.

scot Graham is the other 928 and he should be right in the thick of things with his new engine!!!!! (see mostly euro 4.7 liter S with Ljetronic build up)

The race went well, except i used some old hoosiers for qual, but still got myself on the front row with the viper, but the times were only average. I was slipping and sliding worse than ever, in qualifying. thought some of my competitors were just so much better this season, when actually, my car was just soOOO much worse!! so, went home, got another set of old hoosiers and put them on in the morning of the race. right from the warm up lap, i knew they were shot too. so, now i have a loose car and a bunch of hungry M3s, vets, vipers and 4x4 Evo turbos on my tail. There was an exibition class comp coupe viper who was the lead car, which put me behind him at the start, even though i was qualifying second behind the GTS RT10 viper racer. the viper fell asleep at the start, i had to brake check and the mitsubishi and the M3 passed me at turn 2 going 3 wide through 3 as well. then i got the bmer back and was chasing the EvO. 5 laps later , my tires still really bad, the M3 got me in braking and just slowely pulled away at what turned out to be, my usual average lap time. Now, i get the Evo and am up to 3rd and keep that position til the race end battling with another 2002 M3 racer who has smelled blood in the waters with my tire situation. the good news is that he got the race on video and is sending the "drifting action" to me.
I think the cold temps just dont work with old hoosiers. i think on a hot day, they are ok, but if its cold, i should have used the toyos RA1s. heck, just a few months ago in speed WC, and only one clean lap, i ran a 1:41.5, 141.0 and a 1:41.6 in the race short shifting due to the timing belt scare.
i was lucky to break into the 1:42s in qual and worse in the race. Next time im in question, its the Toyos or new hoosiers!!
The worst part of the weekend was Scots 82 part euro 4.7 racer, where we just finished the engine replacement with a somewhat mystery engine from 928 intl. we just got it started on wed before teh weekend and it felt really strong, but had some little problems. WE drove it up to the track Sat am and did some 60-100 mph tests against the Holbert car fully loaded and it was pretty darn close.
so, we know we got the power, but after one day of practice and qualifying, we have racing the next day. it lasts 10 laps and hes running over a second battling with a hot camero, and in a slow turn, the clutch goes in and the engine siezes! just locks up. we think its an electrical until we try to move the engine, its LOCKED up. so, now we need to do the entire process of engine replacement again. Fun fun fun!! thats racing! (or being rushed to not take an engine apart before you put it in the car) we all took a chance on this one and got burned. (hopefully only 2nd degree burns!)
We are going to take the engine out these next couple of weeks and do a post mortem.
Any guesses what went wrong????? car was running rich based on the blackness of the tail pipe and plugs, oil was clean, no leaks, just one hole had unusually high compression (ie 225psi vs 150-185 range for the other holes)
time to start turning bolts with scotty! CT automotive has stepped up to help with free labor if we do most of the grunt work. 928 Intl has also offered to make good on the engine too, but we just need to make sure what actually happened. Any guess.
free RACING CD for the correct guess of the failure cause (or closest guess)

Im gonna guess it spun a bearing.....seems obvious, and (unless you are holding back on your description) loss of a timing belt would have been errr.....noisy...........??
I have a set of fairly good hoosiers I would donate to the cause, but the freight is more than the tires are worth......Thanks for the update Mark. (and Scott)

We are thinking the same, but you never know. a piston could be stuck in a hole or something more interesting.
no, the timing belt is fine. it was new and tensioned properly.
How good are those tires??? ill pay shipping no problem if the faint cross hatching can still be seen . thanks for the offer!

The video is only worth the start lap, and maybe .1 second gain over that evo for about 8 laps. the real video will be that M3 watching me struggle with those rear tires. he probably thought i was practicing for the next Drifting event.
forget all you know about set up. toss it out the window. if you dont have good tires, you are HOSED!!
Thanks, Ill let you know when i get something on video! Hopefully, DVD!

So if your rims are 18's let me know, BTW the tire sizes are 245 x 35 and 275 x 35.

275x18s are the ones i would be interested in , the 245s could be used by scot, if we move forward with his re-project (lots of work ahead!!! )
anyway, they should have two wear grooves and you should be able to see a faint cross hatching if they are good. decent would be , no cross hatching but the little wear holes are all the same depth.
thanks again,

I know that. I got them used on a set of 18 inch rims (BTW you are using 18 inch rims, yes?). They are on the car at the moment, and I have had some fun with them, but I have to get serious and put some street tires on Gretch or I am gonna get a ticket for being...ahhhh.....what did the cop call it? "stupid"?.....yeah that was it.
