That was so awsome
I´ve watched it like 5 times now and still get a grin on my face every time ...
Mark, Do you have any kind of suspension mods on the car? Despite some slipping due to the tires Im amazed that there is´nt any more (visible) body roll on the car in some of the curves.

yes, the car has the devek level II suspension (koni 2 way adj on max settings and hypercoil springs)
the main problem was just the stick. it performed somewhere between how it raced on street tires (toyo T1S) and the toyo RA1s. You actually get a little less roll when the car is not sticking as well. the differnces were subtle, only detectable by comparing video side by side with the car a few months ago. straight line speed was the same (or close) but braking points and cornering speeds were reduced by a lot. If i just put on the toyo RA1s, the 2 seconds could be made up pretty easily. just thought the lighter hoosiers would be better, and how bad could they be??????? well , i found out!! (real bad!)
Here is a shot of the grid, scot on his 82 weisachs fatal voyage to Laguna, and the doomed euro 4.7 we stuck in it.

Is that a great shot of scots car with the monterey bay in the background. Ill tell you , out of the 300cars at the laguna seca SCCA race, these were the only two driven to the track and I have to tell you we had a good time making noise on the way up!! Its nice to regress to 16 years old once a month! I probably had my removable indash stereo going half the time, and the other half was listening and timing our 60-100mph runs on the way to the track!

Scot and I got the engine out and on an engine stand in 4 hours. (so much for the factory estimation of 3x that!).
all that done with a set of metrench and gearwrench by two guys that have never done the whole thing before! didnt even have to remove the hood!
also, all done with a couple of jack stands and on our backs on the ground.
I think i got the cutch out in less than 7 min once the headers were removed!
Not bad for a couple of shade tree mechanics!
now, its time to find out what went wong with the mystery motor (euro 4.7)

WINNER!
not that it was too hard to guess, but you were right. #2 and #6 bearings were welded to the crank and they were spinning in the rod bearing journal. (not good) the rods were colored black from the tremendous heat, and are now junk. I should have never put in the engine to scots car without pulling the pan. it had 1/8" of black grey sludge in there from the start, so that should have been a warning. looked like the oil holes were a little gummed up too, but its hard to tell with all the destruction in the bearing area.
So, lots of work ahead ( of lots of work already!)
tell me where to send the Racing CD Rom for 2004 season.

I have a set of fairly good hoosiers I would donate to the cause, but the freight is more than the tires are worth......Thanks for the update Mark. (and Scott)

AHHHH #2 and #6 rod bearing pics
look at the rods. they are black! (the other rods are sliver, but you cant see them in the pic) temps must have got WAY up there to not only discolor them but weld the bearings to the crank and then the crank and bearings were spinning in the rod journals. (pretty ugly) BUT, it didnt send the rods through the pan, so that was good.
dont know the cause, and thats worries me, and there was lots lof grey/black sludge in the oil pan when we put it in, even though we flushed it out with clean oil an ran it for a couple of hours. The bearing was melted and it filled in one of the oiling holes in the crank. there was some black greasy gunk in the holes too. dont know whether they were previously clogged and caused the failure, or a product of the failure.
anyway, its a rebuild project starting ASAP. got to get Scot running by the end of May!! (SCCA thunderhill race May 22)
comments welcome.
