There's 3 raod kills (well, 1 kill, 1 murder and 1 fun run)
1) And still my favorite!: Going on Sunset Blvd, Sat. night, there was a 996 C4, me and behind an SL55, all 3 of us black cars (nice). From Hollywood to the 405. My avg. speed was like 90, the C4 was always half a car in front of me, and i noticed that he was trying really hard to escape...wow! the shark DO like curves! i did pass him twice, but in the straights he would take advantage (my car is an auto)...When we arrived to the 405, we exchenge thumbs up (very rare coming from a 996 owner) and the look in his eyes was like:"man, i can't believe i didn't get away". BTW: the SL55 appeared like 10 seconds later, looking at the shark all amazed and ashamed.

2) Going on the 101 to Solvang: i see this nice black 993 and ask my wife "is it a turbo?", well, let's see..i pushed it and got right behind them, not only a turbo, but a real RUF 993, spotless..they slowed down and gave me a BIG thumbs up!..I did the BWAAAAHHH to show them the shark power, later on like 50 miles ahead. they past by again with thumbs up, and took off as fast as that thing could just before leaving the freeway.. Best morning in the shark, because besides the RUF guys, i had like 10 more thumbs up from diverse motorists, including a nice Harley.

3) AN H2!. On the street, from a red light..i see the guy behind me and really having a hard time to pull next to me right in the light. He slams the pedal, H2 makes a loud takeoff...i am thinking "what the &*^$*&%$!!?, what did he smoked today??? is he for real?..i even tought that maybe there are hummers with superchargers and pulleys and stuff to make them faster (if so, is this one of them?)...well, when he was 5 cars ahead, i took off...3 seconds later i chewed on that hummer spit it and stepped on it. All without even going much faster than the speed limit

I was able to take out my GT yesterday after some long down time-had a bad NEW idle switch. Back to running great, and went out for a nice little drive on my favorite 'closed course road'. I really was not out looking for trouble, just a nice shakedown run after another intake R&R.

A very nice Saleen S281 with a bit more boost, exhaust, and drag radials wound up in front of me, and I just kept pace away from the light 2 cars back. Mr. mustang decided to hammer it, and although I was in second gear already, I decided to play. I pulled even by the short shift to 3rd (avoiding wheelspin), and walked by hard through 3rd. By the shift to 4th, 3-4 cars advantage 928. No drama, just a short run through a couple of gears.

The guy was cool afterwards, and was shocked that I had only a 5.0 with a little boost and some exhaust. The worst part was when he saw the booster seats in the back, just shook his head and laughed.

Did I mention I love this car!

Default 3 Kill Stories...

I have three kill stories to talk about from this weekend.

Story 1:

First a little background. I am a very lucky person to have such good friends in many places – one of my best friends on this planet is Tim Murphy. His generosity and friendship are second to none. Sure we have to put up with Hacker-Pschorr, but it’s still generally worth it. As many or most of you know, I have one of the rare 928 Specialists’ twin-screw supercharger kits on my ’91 GT. It’s always been a great performer, but it would be a lie to say there isn’t a little competitive rivalry between Murf and me – I actually think that it has added to our friendship.

Every time, I’ve been there, we invariably end up doing a little rolling drag race 40 or 50 to 100, and EVERYTIME he beats me with the “wife’s car” which has his stage III super shark kit on it. I think the score was up to 10 to 0 with one draw, maybe two, all in Murf’s favor.

So this past weekend, I was at Casa de la Murphy once again, and my goal for this visit was to put my car on the same exact same dyno where I posted the 443RWHP last fall. I have since installed some new go-fast parts and wanted to see if I could get it up to about 475RWHP. I figured this was the HP level I needed to be at in order to beat Murphy. – and that was my simple little goal for the weekend.

Now unfortunately we had a slight mishap and the car that we were really trying to get on the dyno snapped its Achilles’ heel. You probably have seen the carnage in the other thread. So our dyno day got scrapped as we had other things to take care of (like see if we could find a new torque tube in Green Bay).

But we did have the opportunity to go out for a little drive (actually we were heading to the dyno once again, but that’s another story) and we were able to “line up” the cars on the highway. The road was clear in front of us so we both slowed down to about 45 or 50 MPH. I looked over at Tim and Z and Tim begins the count. 1… 2… 3…

BWWAAAAAAAAAAAAA….

The sound of two 500hp 928’s screaming down the highway is simply intoxicating. I was in third gear and was able to immediately pull on Murf by about a half a car length, then he shifted and slipped back a bit more. I think I had almost a car length on him but I now had to grab 4th gear. When I did he gained on me momentarily, but then I started to just walk away. By now I’d say we were going about 110 and it was clear that I had beat him. Woo Hoo! I achieved my goal. That felt good.

When we got back, Murf deflated my accomplishment a bit when he told me that his belt was slipping and was only make 13psi, instead of the normal 15psi. Maybe so, but all I know is that I won that race regardless of slip or not. Finally, the score is 10 to 1.

I’m actually glad he had some excuses for his lack of performance, because that means we can go for it again one of these days. My guess is he’ll figure out a way to beat me, but that’s okay, because it will just push me to optimize my setup a bit more and squeeze out a few more ponies. It is so much fun.

Story 2:

Today as I was driving back from Murf’s place I was driving through Indiana when I spotted a white 911 GT3 merging onto the highway. This looked to be a pretty recent edition, maybe a 2010? There were 4 lanes on our side of the divided highway and if lane 1 is the left-most/fast lane, I was in lane #2.

Managed to a get a pic when he got around me for a short bit.

He obviously saw me go past him as he was coming up to speed, because he tried to swing into the fast lane by cutting across all four lanes and was attempting to blow past me. As soon as he was in lane #1, I dropped the hammer! I downshifted into 4th and then grabbed 5th and rocketed away from him.

I came up on traffic and slowed down. He swung back into lane 4 and got around me. It took me a few seconds to find my way through traffic and catch up to him, but then we were setup for round two. GAME ON!

I got alongside him and we both dropped the hammer. I was really surprised I was able to run away from him. It wasn’t even close.

But looking at the specs, I shouldn’t be so surprised. (2010) 435HP (flywheel) at 3100 pounds vs. my 550ish flywheel HP at 3600 pounds. Score another one for me!

Story 3:

This last story was probably the most fun of today. I had just finished digesting my GT3 snack when I came up on my current dream car! An Audi R8 FSI V10. Don’t know what year it was, but it was definitely a FSI (5.2l) model because it only had twin tail pipes instead of the quad… and it said V10 on the side!

The guy driving it was bit of a pansy if you ask me, and it took some baiting to get him to play. Unfortunately traffic was heavy and there weren’t too many stretches to get out game on, but we managed a few sprints here and there.

The first few were 80 to 110 type runs. The cars seemed pretty evenly matched, but I think these short bursts were really too short to tell.

While this was going on, I tried to call Murf to let him know what was going on. Strangely, Z (a.k.a. Mike Schmidt) answered the phone – btw, this was with a blue-tooth, so both hands were free. So I start telling him about it. Hacker was in the background asking what type of R8 this was, and frankly I didn’t know at the time. Shut up Hacker! Gosh! Then we hit an open patch and it was on!

We started at 80MPH and I started calling out speeds to Z on the phone as if they were going by in 1 second increments. “100… 110… 120… 130… … 150!”

Then we hit the brakes. I pretty much walked the guy at the beginning, but he was starting to reel me in. I’m sure his 6-speed helped him out in that area. So it was clear that in the 100+MPH area, the 5.2l R8 is a tad faster than my Super Screwed Shark.

This went on for what seemed like an hour. Back and forth. I lead, he leads. This made for a quick drive back home which was greatly appreciated.

Then just East of Kalamazoo, there is a stretch of divided highway road I like to call the Kalamazoo speedway, because there are no places for the cops to sit, no exits, no onramps, and everyone does 90+ on this stretch.
The road was clear for at least a half a mile. I had him come along side me, and got him to slow down to about 55MPH and started the countdown. 3… 2… 1... BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Let me tell you, that new exhaust of mine sounded like music as it reverberated off of the center barrier of the highway. Pure music! I could listen to that thing all say long as I work through the gears.

Of course I ran away from him this time. 55 to 100 wasn’t even close. I must have had 4 or 5 car lengths on him. I didn’t push it any faster this time as it was clear the 928 was the superior machine. I did see him throw his hands up in disgust, so maybe he missed a gear with his flappy paddle shifters.

Unfortunately, the party ended there because he had to get off at Climax, MI (yes, it’s a real place). He waved, mouthed “Thank You!” and gave me a big thumbs up.

What a treat!

This was the best drive back from Grenn Bay, EVER!

BTW, did I mention I love my car and my 928 friends!

AO, I know the kzoo highway very well! That's where I used to do some high-speed pulls. Usually heading westward as the is a perfect decline to facilitate accelleration. And that was a homestretch run with a touch down on kzoo, exit 80.
Man, even semi trucks running d-town/chi-town load are doin' 90 thru there!

Great stories!

Be careful out there, we had a local 928 guy have some bad luck here this weekend, they actually took him to jail for speeding, at a speed that is not very high for that stretch of road, they just threw some work signs up an lowered the limit.

no, was not me either.

Sadly, you would not be the first or second one that I have had to bail out this year all ready.

This local 928 guy had his own support group, he just called me because of a conversation we had just had at my shop a few hours before.

One of the guys (cop) I had warned both of these 928 owners was the Coweta County "Blue" cars, and he manages to get cuffed by the Lieutenant of the "Blue" cars, the HEAT team.

They do not play.

Wow! Never saw this thread before. Can I play, too?

I was running up 3-lane 101N early one Saturday morning at high speed, headed to a Sonoma autocross. Approaching into Santa Rosa, another P-car came up to flank me in the far LH lane. We were both headed to the county airport for some fun. We did a few miles together like that at speed, me in the RH lane, he in the LH.

Then a ricer Mitsubishi starts coming up from behind, he was really hauling *** to catch up. He was full throttle, headlights on, the whole 9 yards. So we continue like this for a mile or two, with the Mitsu gradually gaining on us in the middle lane. We were travelling at over twice the limit, the ricer is just catching up...

Suddenly we all come around a right bend... and there is the CHP Camaro sitting there staged under an overpass! Both us Pcars hit the brakes simultaneously, scrubbing off serious speed (love those S4 calipers, BTW) and the Mitsu literally shoots right up between us at well over 2x the posted speed limit! Of course the party lights come on in the Camaro.

We passed the ricer and the CHP about a mile up. Good times!

Geez..forgot about this thread, but hey, I haven't been around for a while. Good timing though as I had an incident last weekend that left me wondering.

Was around 10PM on a Friday night...doing the speed limit on a side road headed to the Freeway when a Caymen cruised passed me on the right. He did a little slow down then sped up to slip in front of me to get on the freeway ramp. There was a stop light we were stopped at before the ramp and he was in front of me. I really thought nothing of it until we headed down the ramp onto the freeway. He stomped on it and my knee jerk reaction was to do the same. Scared the crap out of me how fast I was up his tailpipe! I had to let off as I thought I would plow into him. He slowed a bit then stomped again a little further up the road. Incidentally, this looked like a 2011 car, but sounded like it was barfing parts all over the freeway. Once again I was up his ***. I jacked my car over to the right lane and left him for dead. I slowed down a mile up the road and cruised for a bit and then I finally saw him slip past in the far right lane in traffic. It was obvious he had his tail tucked between his legs and didn't want to get near me again.

I thought those cars were MUCH faster than that. I was embarrassed for him. Are they really that crappy?...again, sounded like complete dog S***.

Nice to hear from you Keith ..... yes I drove a couple of Caymans a.few years ago in Portland at Porsche Parade & 2 things were super clear.1) not a lot of power and 2) incredible understeer for a.mid-engine!!!

Still really fun little go-carts though. No match 4 your beastly GTS.

I raced a running cow the other day. Wasn't even close. Of course in my defense, I was in a work zone.

The day I first drove the stroker home from Greg's, I stopped by 928Intl to show they guys, and then headed home. While I'm waiting at a red light in Anaheim, this 2007 AMG SL55 pulls up next to me. I look over, and damned if it isn't Mark Anderson himself. My worst nightmare....

Light goes green, and I guess he was having an off day 'cause as you know, Mark doesn't usually lose. But I didn't lose either, all the way up to a blistering 75 mph or so. Had we been coming out of 11 at Laguna Seca, I woulda had 'im, at least to somewhere near track-in for turn 2 (or 1...).
