Default 928 Road Stories

I was driving home from work tonight when something came up behind me and started tailgating. The parking and driving lights looked similar to 928 lights but the headlights were too small. The car made a couple of moves to the left as if to pass but it was impossible on busy one lane route 6 in Bristol. We came up to a long uphill stretch where the road widens to two lanes, one regular and one slow truck lane. I was at 50 mph in third gear and moved to the right as soon as the lane began. We both nailed it and at first he began to gain on me but as the speed and rpms increased he fell back and by the top of the hill the 928 was easily walking away from him. I probably should have gone to second gear at the start and then it wouldn't have even been a challenge. Speed at the top of the hill where the lanes merged back into one was about 80 mph. Back to normal speed and one lane he made a couple more moves to the left and then I turned off and got a look at him as he went by. The car was a 300ZX with big aftermarket wheels and a huge rear spoiler, like you see on so many civics these days. Chalk one up for the 928!

You will get some whining from the PC crowd......just ignore it....even the silent 'listers like reading the stories......that is what an anonamous BB if for.....

BTW, I would be VERY surprised if the car in the story above was a twin turbo. Back in the day (when I was young and foolish) I took one of those on. The tall rear end gears in my 89 GT meant that I had to be in third gear between 90 and 105 to keep ahead of him. As soon as I went to 4th gear he would start to pull away from me. We peaked at around 110 mph, if I could have taken the race over 110, I could have forced him to shift gears and I would have had him again. Those little twin turbos were very quick.

Sometimes I run that race over again in my head, only this time I have Mr. Murphy's iron lung installed.......

You should be ashamed of yourself Gretch - "kill stories" and street racing is dangerous, you have no reason to ever go over the 55mph speed limit no matter what. I thought I knew you, thought you were a responsable person, now I know better. I feel sick to my stomach after reading this. Can you not think of the children? THE CHILDREN!!!!!

WTF was that?

Good job - any idea if it was a Turbo Z or not?

I had a normally aspirated AT 300ZX with a Dinan chip followed by a stock 5sp 300ZX Twin Turbo. The non-turbo ZX is no match for my '88 S4 in any speed range no matter what wing is bolted on the rear. The TT is, IMO, a sweet car - quick and agile like a go-cart, reliable, etc. - but not nearly as refined as the 928. I think the TT would give my shark a good run up to 100mph. After that I'm guessing the shark would prevail even though I have little experience at those speeds.

A SC shark should be compared with a Stillen-upgraded TT - fair is fair.

Just my experience. I am completely infatuated with my shark and would never go back.

Mike has quite a list now, including at least 1 Ferrari. Don't fuel his fire too much though, I want to keep him in one piece.

It can't be helped, not once you get that first kill, that first taste of blood, there is no going back.

Speaking of this type of story......

Saturday I was at a Stop Sign waiting to pull into traffic. I see the odd headlights of the new Corvette. A nice black one. I got in line behind him and passed by some traffic. He gunned it, not sure if he was full throttle or not but I caught him and slowed when we came up on traffic. At the next light I pulled up next to him and told him how much I liked his car. He says, "Man that thing is fast. I've always loved the 928. Have you had that since new? Its beautiful. What are you running for HP?" I told him I'm stock other than the cat-less H-pipe and RMB. We each left with a smile and a thumbs up.

Now, anybody think he was actually full throttle? I wouldn't think I could catch him if he was? My timing is advanced sort of like chip would do I suppose.

Anyway, I caught him and could've passed unless he was just playing with me.
