Default perf. chips removed, G-TECH results

Curiosity got the better of me this weekend. I removed my Auto-thority chipset from my 87 5 sp. to compare 0-60 runs. I was hearing much about the impotence of these , i had to see for myself. My best G-tech runs with the chips were always in the 5.3 - 5.4 range. my personal best was 5.27! Now with the stock chips reinstalled i have not been able ,for the life of me, get under 5.7. these measurements were taken with the pro ss so the accuracy is reliable. Needless to say the perf. chips are going back in! As a side note,I do like the wa
y the car behaves with the stock chips.

Can you post an after re-install set of times just for my morbid curiosity? Just in case something else has changed to affect the data.

Thanks,

Great data! When you say you like the way the car behaves with the stock chips, what do you mean in comparison to the Autothority chips? A .3-.4 drop in 0-60 is very good! Maybe I should look into some chips?

Hi Brian,
I also have a few light mods in addition to the chips. They do make a difference because the numbers don't lie! All my runs are done on the same road at the same starting spot everytime i test.
I really try to be accurate in that respect. So the results are in, and they do make a difference. The car is tamer and not as wound up with stock chips. The exhaust note is even quieter. .3-.4 difference is substantial but i have proven it to be the case in my car! I really believe the difference is off the line performance. with stock chips it feels much slower off the line.

You have the same super tall 2.20 rear end that I do, with the benefit of a 5 speed and LSD. I have got as low as 5.98 0-60 on my G-tech and had a 6.13 at the track a couple weeks ago (about 30 degrees warmer at the track). I don't think my car has chips in it already, since it passed smog so easily. I would be happy with even a 2 tenths drop! 5.7-8 for a nearly stock auto (only rmb), I would be quite happy with that!

My auto came with chiped but the manual that I just purchased has the stock ships. Same year (see sig). Can I swap them between the auto and the manual trans cars?

Yes you can! Last summer I swapped the brains back and forth between my cars a dozen times at least.

PS your sig shows 85.5 and 86.5, didn't know they had a 85.5.

Update,
autothority chips back in and first run yielded a 5.41 ! Will try for that 5.3 i was getting before the swap when i have more time tomorrow. It was a fair amount of aggravation swapping in then swapping out then in again, but I really wanted to prove to myself that " it was'nt all in my head". I just hope there won't be any ill effects on the engine in the long run since the chips are in to stay now.

Shane, good catch. I think I was so excited to add the second car last Sunday when we arrived home with it that my fingers were out of control.

Thanks for the brain swap idea, I was going to just pull the chips, but I guess it would be easier just to pull the whole box instead.

So the result of this experiment is that Autothority chips will take about 0.35 seconds off the 0-60 time of an '87S4. Cool! It sounds like Dr. Porsche left some horsepower on the table, to keep the beast a little tamer?

My '87S4 is completely stock except for RMB. Last week I ran a 6.1, (hand-timed, FWIW).

I'm getting a piggyback tuner from PerfectPower that I will try to use for tuning. It will be interesting to see if I can make more of a difference with this tuner setup than the Autothority chips. I'll have to get a G-Tech and conduct this experiment scientifically. Will post any meaningful results, of course.

If you are using a tuning device, put it on the dyno , and final tweak it on the street, or else you run the risk of pissing off every cop in the county, and possibly totaling your car trying to tune it and running into some loser in a mini van not paying attention.
