What's wrong with the dish wheels?
It seems the overwhelming opinion that people dislike the dish wheels. i assume because of the look. I really think they look the best, particularly on the S4's and later when they are of different widths. I really dislike the Cup wheels. The GTS wheels are fine, but I wouldn't replace the dish wheels with them.
Is there some other reason the dish wheels aren't popular? For racing I know all bets are off, but is there a reason other than aesthetics that the dishes seem to be unpopular?

The dish wheels suit the car fine for the 'time'. They do look dated and do not hold up to the bodystyling of the 928 over time.
If swapped Cup 1 GTS(more square spoke. It would be nice to get them back!) with the flat dish and it totally updates /transforms the vehicle.

Brakes: People spend thousands on new big calipers and crossed drilled rotors, so they want to show them off.
Style: The large open style wheels in 17" & 18" wheels really update and modernize the look of the car.

The flat "dish" wheels are one piece forged construction, a slight weight and strength advantage over the cast alternatives. Mine are chromed and I think that look suits the styling of the car just fine.

I think the dish wheels look great.......when they are in good condition. Most of the time their finish falls victim to age and lack of care. Freshly re-anodized, pollished, or chromed they look fantastic IMO. They are also fairly light and really strong.

One other good reason, one of mine any way, is traction, need bigger badder wheels/tires to stay stuck to the road when increased HP demands it.

I jsut don't like the looks of the dish wheels. To me they look very dated even when in good shape. I changed both my S4's over to the GTS C1's and I think they look much better, but it's all just a matter of opinion and what you like

I for one think they look great. The fact that they are of "dated" styling is of little consequence to me since anyone who matters knows the cars I drive are over 20 years old anyhow. As a matter of fact, I've gotten more compliments on the basis of them being well cared for examples that are unmolested than them having modern styling.
I would have liked to have seen them in 17" though, at least then we wouldn't have the issues of caliper clearance on the GTS brake upgrade. As for showing off your brakes, I liken the dish wheel to the woman whose clothes compliment her figure, but don't bare too much skin; classy, alluring, and leaving something for the imagination.
That said, anyone with a set of 2 or 4 16x8" dish wheels that has "updated" already, let me know what it will take to get them out of your way. I've got two sets of 16x7" (one chrome, one silver) that need larger counterparts for the rear end. I'd rather have a full set of Club Sports (16x8" and 16x9"), but I suspect the cost is much too dear. Condition is only an issue if it impedes functionality. PM me at your convenience.

The forged 'dish' is a superior strength wheel with a rich anodized finish unmatched by any painted cast wheel IMHO; however. I agree with many that change them out for aesthetic reasons - dated look, etc..
The widely distained 'dish' wheel is handicapped by superfluous metal. The Club Sport wheel ( see 8" front, adjacent avatar) is fundamentally identical to the 'dish', changed dramatically in appearance by a slight surgical weight reduction.
Maybe a face lift ( or three) didn't do much for Phyllis Diller - but it had dramatic effects on the appearance of the 'dish'.

I guess living around a bunch of rednecks who really screw up the looks of perfectly good cars has something to do with it. At least most 928 drivers are tasteful with their mods, probably because they're usually over age 30.

I'm one of the oddballs that really like the dish wheels. I also like the modern look of the newer style wheels. Becomes a personal choice. For someone who has restored several antique and muscle cars over the years, changing the wheels doesn't do a damn thing for the overall value of the car. Performance yes, value no. Since most of our 928's are getting older and more rare by the day it only makes since to at least keep that original set of wheels stored away. Someday those original wheels are going to help drive up the value of an older, well kept 928 from a collectors view point. Just watch Barrett, Jackson auctions and see them rag on cars that don't have the original wheel sets. As far as Cup wheels are concerned, if I never see another Cup wheel on a 928 it will be too soon! Come on, with all the choices out there it seems that the person looking to upgrade the look of his/her car can do better than to copy the same old thing. Unless, of course, your car came with them. (another .02 cents worth)
