Engine swap...16v vs 32v
Sitting in my garage for about 2 years +..... I was temporarely disoriented and somewhat slightly insane when I decided to get rid of my 1979 928 with a low milage 82 euro S engine and a rebuilt auto....I tried to sell it..... At first I got no takers..I lowered the price and interest rised somewhat. I then saw the light and changed my mind.... I decided to keep the car.
I'm now going to take it apart and rebuild pretty much all that needs an upgrade or swap, body kit and I am considering a SC setup....I like the sound of "twin screw".
Question 1.
Is it a better solution to use th 32v engine with a SC set up instead of the 16V?
If so..whats involved in swapping engines and what model 32v would be the best of the 32v's to go with my 79?
Question 2.
What about the transmission? Is it possible to put a 4 speed auto or a 5 speed manual in the place where my 3 speed auto now sits?

Thanks, but thats not what I'm thinking of.
You see, a couple of years ago I was outrunned by 3 punks in an Audi rs2...it was even a stationcar...arrrghhh. They even had the guts to laugh their a$$es of in the progress.
I think I need something more than stock to go together with rest of my planned mods at this point..not that I keep it floored all the time... but...sometimes I am sorry to say I cannot help it.
I am also, shamful to say, looking at options like a suped up chevy smallblock up front.
I would prefer to keep it somewhat Porsche in the front. And as I previously said..there is a nice ring to "twin screw".

Geirs original 4.5l engine has been swapped for a 4,7l Euro "S" engine. That means 10:1 compression and K-Jetronic fuel management.
I guess we are in exactly the same situation Geir, maybe we should order 2 stage 2 kits from 928Motorsports and try to get a discount?

Is it so to understand that the major problem I would encounter would be the wiring in connection with the fuel management if I'm swapping to the 32v?

hoyo, thats correct. the 86 S2 allready has LH injection and essentialy all that is needed is to swap the two brains (LH and EZK) for the later ones. what kind of engine management do you have now?

no i dont. its great that the S4 engine has been proven to cope with supercharging and maybe your euro 'S' will likewise cope however the S4 has a better shaped combustion chamber. john K has turbocharged a 16v car and in the process converted it to MAF based fuelling (i think) he may have some insight on what would be needed to convert from early to late engine management.

The swap of engine control from a 16 valve S2 [Euro 1984 - 1986] to S4 is not a simple "remove the old modules and plug in the new modules" job. The S2 LH and EZF are 25 pin modules. The S4 uses EZK (spark knock detect) and it and the LH module are 35 pin modules. The S4 is a much more sophisticated system. The controllers are differnent generations, the older using 8039 microcontrollers and the S4 generation using 8031 microcontrollers. A complete wiring harness change as well as central electric change [relays] would be required.

rich, thats true you do need the engine harness as well as the modules and engine. im led to believe that the wiring between the LH, EZK and the rest of the car (not engine) is comparatively straightforward with possibly only 4-5 wires difference, i will be finding out directly!

Perhaps you could get the power you want from the S engine with a supercharger set to a lower boost level.
Some people have changed from an automatic transmissions to a manual. It's a lot of work. Easier and less money to buy a 5spd, maybe damaged or blown engine, and swap in the good pieces from your car.
The preceding statement ignores the fact that 928 ownership is not about "easy," "cheap" nor "logcial."
