My conclusion is weak battery, flooding, weaker battery, more flooding. The plugs were dripping wet. Eventually with some drying out and cranking it for quite a while, it responded. Mark was happy, but I wasn't at first. It seemed to be running on 7 cyls, and there was a lot of clatter (sticky lifters), but an Italian tune-up did the job as Mark reports. It ran pretty smoothly after he drove it on the freeway at high RPM for a while.
We found oil around the plugs (cam cover seals). The car needs to be gone through in terms of vacuum lines and top end seals, and I would have the injectors cleaned while the manifold is off. Mark has the right attitude. With a little attention it should be ready for another 140K miles.

Mark,
It was good meeting you and your wife (and your 928).
I'm glad Bill and I were able to be of some help.
I hope you get all the other things taken care of, I think you'll enjoy
the car when it's 100% healthy.
And thanks for helping Bill and I remove the rear seats in my car.
Bill thank you also. By the way, I forgot I need to remove the door panels,
so I guess I have something to do tomorrow.

Two sense of advice--
If the engine was way flooded, and it sounds like it was, the lifter clatter could easily be the result of a little oil dilution from the gas. You were probably due for a change soon anyway. Cheap insurance. You can do a sniff test on the dipstick, but it takes a lot of gas to show up that way.
Glad you guys figgered it out!
