I hate to admit my ignorance, but how do we change the index of the cam say by a 1/2 tooth. I'm interested in the tool as part of this process, by passenger side bank is always off just a bit.

The WSM procedure for the 32V involves using a dial indicator, and measuring the amount of lift on the face of a lifter, when the engine is at 20 degrees past cylinder #6 TDC (=#1 BDC). If the lift is not what is stated for the particular year/cam, then the cam bolt is loosened, and the cam is rotated until the measurement is obtained.
The factory specs a slightly different value for the right (US passenger) cam, to allow for the envisioned advance caused by expansion of the engine when the engine is at operating temperature.
My tool indicates the center of the cam woodruff key, which corresponds to the notch on the 16V, non-adjustable gears, and indicates TDC for cylinder #1. It also shows plus or minus 6 degrees in 2 degree increments.
Ideally you would set your cams using the WSM method, then, using my pointer, record the degree measurement for each bank. From there you can easily play with the advance, or retard, and return to stock, without having to remove the cam covers.
Generally speaking, advancing will give you more torque, lower in rpms, and retarding will raise horsepower, higher in rpms. Raising one, however, will reduce the other.

I just found out you may not be able to use the pointers for '87-up. The hall effect wheel behind the right cam gear is in the way!
They work great for the 16V conversions, and should work for '85, '86.
