Funny thing: The Nordstadt Golfs were faster than the 928 - because they had a lower drag coefficient. Talk about "looks can be deceiving"...

Model Badge Numbering
Flint
This may be apocryphal, but I'd heard that was started in what we quaintly refer to as the "fuel crisis" when upper managers and such would buy their cars, they'd initially buy the ones with smaller engines so their workers wouldn't slash their tires--then when the employees got used to the car, they'd quietly upgrade to the full-power version, making everyone think they were still driving a more economical vehicle.

I had a buddy that lived in The Netherlands that would have his S600 scratched all the time. He subsequently removed the badges, and replaced them with S280, and presto, no more scratches...
On the other hand, I saw some show off's who took an S280 or 728 and replaced the badges to say 600 or 750 to attract attention... This is even funnier...!
Porsches have a bit more acceptance in my opinion due to the sporting heritage and fun. I also removed the Model designation numbers on my 740... As nicole, says, it's also nobody'y business.. It's also fun to not have the numbers, as then many people want to ahem, "race" you on the highway, as they think "oh, big car and small engine" made for some interesting runs... Sometimes got home quicker though...
Nothing wrong with big car and small engine... Hell, a sensible option for a big car like S Class or 7 Series is the V8 Turbo Diesel.. Cheap and wayyyy fast.. Torque by the boatload... Did I say cheap to run...?

I don't. The European system of "neo-socialistic" Anti-objectivist Ayn Rand-described-hell of the "level playing field" and the bullying positon of the unions would only SPONSOR such activity.

This behavior is more prominent in some areas than others.

I can't decide if I'm disappointed because it's not a real Golf or because the disguised 928 isn't all that fast compared to a healthy Golf GTI!!!

He is from Småland however, a part of Sweden where people have a tradition of being stingy.

It's interesting how these philosophies about ordering new cars come about. Some don't want anybody to know, and others are desperate to show off. I knew a family where Dad worked for Mercedes. And every year they ordered their car in a vastly different color combo - just to tease the neighbors by "demonstrating" they have a new car...

This was featured in Road and Track or Car and Driver back around 1979 or 1980 as I recall. It was coined a "wolf in sheep's clothing" to unsuspecting autobahn burners...
