Default What is it about Vette owners?

I have a buddy who owns a 2000 C5 that is highly modified. Everytime he does something to it, he sends out a broadcast email to everyone he knows about how "bad" his car is, making reference in comparison to the other higher end cars of the world out there. We all know that you get a lot of bang for the buck with a c5 to present vette. But let's forget about the money right now.

Yesterday, he sends out a broadcast about the new 05 Z06 with a 427 being the power plant and the bhp to weight ratio as compared to 911TT's, Ford GT's, Ferrari 430's...and the list goes on. Then ends it with how chevy kicks A** and Porsche needs to put their cars on a lung machine. I had to laugh, this is nothing short of "We're still pissed and the south is gonna rise again!"

He has sent me copies of posts on the vette boards and most of them seem to have the same state of mind. These are adults too! They always seem to make reference to the P car as if it pissed in their cornflakes at some point in the past.

I had to tell him that the 911 is a 6cyl designed for a different type of driving experience and that he needs to compare apples to apples. The new Z06 does have some impressive specs, but it is a factory tuner car, not a run of the mill production car.

He even went as far as quoting Jay Leno telling Jesse Ventura that his vette will out run Jesse's Porsche any day of the week.

Now he wants to race me!...2000 modified C5 against stock 93 GTS. LOL Somehow his general post turned to, I'llllllll smoke ya with my chevy since all I told him was he wasn't making the proper comparisons..

BTW, I would gladly go up against him in a safe legal manner if he could find a place where we could run the cars. I would have no issues losing, but would like to see by how much....again, not a good apples to apples comparison.

I just have to shake my head and wonder what the beef is?

Keith, IMHO it statistics. There are more 'vettes out there than Porsches. So, it's statistically enevitiable that there will be more 'vette nut cases than Porsche nut cases - all other things equal which they may not be.

But, yeah, I too have noticed Yellow Cereal Syndrome on the 'vette boards. On the other hand, we've members with a related disease strain: Advanced Oderless Excrementitis.

Hey Keith, I agree with you, but you better hold back a little on racing him. I owned a 2000 vette with no modifications. An It would kill all my cars including my "94 GTS. In other words, if he is talking alot now, if you race him, he might never shut up.

'tis a good idea. A stock GTS should be able to deal with a stock C5 on a track. Especially, if the track is one that is demanding on brakes.

On the other hand, a mod'd C5 might have have some serious stick.

On the gripping hand, it's going to be the torque on the nut behind the wheel that matters most.

Keith the key is to not take him up on his offer, because no matter what you do, you cannot improve this fellow's state of ignorance. I have done this type of thing in the past, and they always come back with some reason why they didn't do well against the old Porsche ... tyres were too narrow, road wasn't warm enough, if only that car hadn't pulled ahead of them ... etc etc etc.

Sounds to me like your buddy isn't that much of a buddy, he wants to be the lord of the realm.

BTW:
I knew a very nice, very enthusiastic Vette owner (two of them) ... both later models, one might even have kicked my S4's butt. They used to saunter into my office with a cup of coffee and we'd talk cars for hours. Never once did they want to race or put my Porsches (even the 944) down.

Yea, it's tough not to get sucked into the vortex of some statements and find yourself whirling around in the same goop these guys are lounging in. You just can't believe the nerve I hit with just telling him the 911 is a 6 cyl. He flipped out and said that is why they never want to run with him on the freeway. I told him, No, they are just socially more intellegent....he lost it. LOL

I have noticed some 928er's waving the same flag, but not at the level of these vette guys.

Larry. good idea!

I've had similar "altercations" with vettes.. so far NONE of them has beaten me
I sold a 77 stingray recently, the new owner was gonna restore it and we sitting around talking cars (he has a TON of late model muscle cars), he starts telling me how fast they were,,,, blah blah blah.. so I offered to compare the 77 stingray to my 77 shark,,, he NEVER knew that Porsche had an 8cyl car!!! of course I happily showed him around one, and a little show and tell later (bbwwwaaahhhh) he has a newfound respect for the Pcars.. (or at least the 928)

Off topic a bit but getting back to coworkers and their cars.

At my new job - my S4 was the talk of the office - Nobody putting it down just a lot of how much HP/Money or how fast does it go. One of the other cats has a 97 M3 with exhaust and airbox mods. He wants to get into tracking his M3 and I might just get him to join Pro Auto Sports and take it to the track.

One can own the car - but can one DRIVE the car.

Take it to the track -

For some car "enthusiasts" it is all about ....LOOK AT ME ,LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME ......with some I must be a "good successfull" person to be able to afford such a car added to the mix. Part of being part of a "special group" typically also entails putting down those NOT in the group as well as developing a special culture and language to reinforce ones "membership"....far too many people's self image is only what they see reflected in other people's eyes. I just laugh out loud when I happen to be behind someone at a stoplight who is driving a flashy car and they are looking at the cars beside them to see who is seeing them....too funny. No matter what pulls up next to me I never obviously look at them. Now about that Rolex

"The only thing i wonder about Vette owners is why they drive them so damn slow."

I agree, but I did happen to watch one pull some amazing maneuver's one evening. I was heading back home around 9PM doing a tad over the speed limit... just under the triple digit mark ...just wanted to get home to relieve my kidneys. I blew past a C5 as he was in the #2 lane. This obviously opened up his testosterone valve, because the next thing I saw was him flying around traffic in all lanes just missing cars by what seemed inches. I remember clearly my response as I blurted out, "What an A**hole!!!...but I'm impressed!" I was certainly amazed at the instant throttle he had and the handling capabilities. This guy was gone in seconds. He waitied for me to catch up to him while I kept a constant speed and then he launched it again in the same reckless/controlled manner. I wasn't having any of it (was in the 82). I am not sure if his car was stock, but I would bet he had more than a couple of factory dogs under the hood.

But yea...they do drive them like old lady's don't they.

I think what you have to take into consideration is the drivers ability. You can have the fastest car in the world, but if you can't drive for ****, forget about it I've driven the big track at Willow Springs, and it will definately separate the men from the boys. I vote to invite him , and then kick his *** Besides, you might end up having some fun
