What is it about Vette owners?

I suffer from the incredible urge to be a self centered, ignorant, blow hard of a Z06 Corvette owner in this post but I just can't do it. Nope. I just ain't going there. But the temptation to start a flame war is almost impossible to deny. However, the better side of me (the 928 owner, obviously) is going to behave.
You should know that Dave Lloyd did coin the phrase the American 928 to describe the C5 because of the similarities and I regularly refer to my car as such. Try it on your buddy and see his eyes bulge! He'll probably have absolutely know idea on how to respond.

Excuse me for getting into this at this late point, but my experience with Corvettes and their owners has been that they are the only ones who seem to "live and let live" out there. Everyone else seems to be so insecure that they either want to challenge your claim to breathe the same air in this world, or race you.....for 50 feet....., or badmouth you and your choice of machines. I have concluded that 'vette drivers are the only ones who posses the maturity and intelligence to recognize someone's preferences and criteria for choices which may be different from their own. Personally, I don't like to drive 'vettes and prefer Porsche for particular reasons, but I respect and will help a 'vette owner in a flash, because I perceive the same mutual respect from them. I like blondes, they like brunettes, and we all like redheads. What's the problem? People who seem to endlessly claim their choice in marques could "kick the world's ***" haven't lived in the real world with their eyes open or brains functioning for very long. Even races are never over until they are over, and I have personally witnessed enough races to realize that the best don't always win in the end. One particular example of this is the Laguna Seca GT-1 and WSC race one day when Hans Stuck lost the race in the last laps because his pit crew couldn't find the correct socket to remove and replace the wheel nut, and they were prevented from borrowing one from another pit crew by the rules. That GT-1 was boss that day until that happened. Was his car and his driving inferior to the competition? I doubt it. Nothing could touch either. People that make comments like the one made to Keith which he relates at the beginning of the thread need to live a bit longer, or to find self worth. He just wanted to suck Keith into a pissing contest among children. Would I give up my 928 because a 'vette could out accelerate it for a quarter mile? Is the world flat? But I would stop to help a 'vette owner on the side of the road because I perceive them as more truly enthusiasts, and only rarely braggarts and dispensers of bravado.
And also because as Corvettes more fully mimic Porsche concepts, the world shall be a better place.
The occasional "kid" with too much money and too little personal security will happen in any group.
I ignore him/her and be thankful that we even have the freedom we do to indulge our passion for differing and distinct choices. If a Corvette is what rings your chimes, I am happy for you. If a P car does it for you we have something in common. I feel I have something in common with 'vette owners.
Now Mustangs are another matter. I won't go there, thank you.

Since he's talking about the top of the line Chevy, how come he's not comparing it to the Carrera GT anyway?

I purchased a new Corvette in 1969 and could hardly wait to show it off. Unfortunately my buddy killed me with his GTO. What really hurt me was my second attempt to show what the Vette had when I was beaten by 2 old guys in a 1968 Cougar. Since then I have had 2 Ferrari and 3 928 Porsche cars and have never raced anyone. Must be something about owning a Corvette.

Oh boy....two more emails from him and then the last being a private email directly to me....he's upset. Wants a race reeeeally bad. I told him we can race mopeds as it has as much to do with his original post as our own cars do. Known him for a few years, but now just learning of his "short comings".
I mentioned the Cheyanne thing, the P car design team with the Chebby team, the apples to apples and how he needs to relax before he has a heart attack. I have gotten a real good chuckle out of this the last two days, but this could go ugly quick. I never once bad mouthed the vette or even him, but he see's it wayyy different. And NOW, he is asking me why I keep talking about the P car as he had mentioned several others. Uhmmmm let's see................oh yeah, I think it was that thing about the lung machine.....
I give...and I never even started, just gave him a couple of factoids and asked a few questions. I would bet he posted a thread on one of the vette boards over this....the NERVE!!!!!

Many times someone wants to race my 928 on the road. I usually say to myself: "You win, I lose. You're too good for me", and I let them go. Or I slow down until they pass me. Guess who wins then?
Once in awhile I have been accompanied by a courteous guy in a Mustang or other like car at rather "interesting" speeds if the road is clear and dry. If he wants to tag along at a reasonable distance and we decide to cover some ground, OK, and then I will back off and let him lead for awhile. And we will part friends. Always looking for hazards and smokeys. If he gets pushy, I am out of there and I resume strumming my own guitar by myself somewhere else.
But mostly, I simply "let them win" and go about my business. Occasionally I have passed them later at speeds they probably wish they will never see.
But if they keep at it, I won't play. I figure they have the problem, not me, or why would they be so concerned about it? I give up, and hopefully that will make them give up. Let them win their bravado and I win the war. I doubt I will jump into another make car just because they claim it is better; they are really saying that they like it better than my car. So what? The same might be said for women, eh?

This is a great post, I'm really enjoying it. The C5 is a great car, out here we had a prototype Monaro. You guys call them the GTO, anyway one of those ahd a 427 engine in it with the dry sump. I saw it at the motorshow and many times on tv racing in a series called "I don'tknow" no it wasn't that, it was something like Nations cup. That was it. Anyway it did kick ***. It did beat the GT3s it did beat the Diablos GTs it did beat the Vipers and it certainly beat the 360 Modenas. One Modena at Bathurst, a really tough street circuit in the country, one of the 360s did two engines, it was a 12 hr race. Also I buy race engine tech mag, yes that is is really dear one, That engine in the C5 is really light and powerful, it is certainly beatable but it it is solid and quite light.
I just wish I could continue my engine project, that would have been good for all. working on cheaper projects like a PSD and digi dash conversion.

By the way, all you 'PORSCHE' guys, versus the true 'car guys' who appreciate a bad-*** car regardless of manufacturer, keep crying sour-grapes; you know who you are. Remember though, the new C6 Z06 will kick major-*** including the Viper, and all your wimpering 'this and that' justifications won't change the impending reality once the car hits the streets.
The simplicity, and subsequent beauty of the OHV 2v engine is stunning to behold; KISS personified.
Wait; I started my post last night before bed and noticed this this morning:

Damm the Cayenne comments had to hurt! Make sure he knows that it makes more power from an engine 35% smaller! I was looking at the power to weight numbers of the new Z06 of 6.26...shoot a GTS would need about 560 crank hp to match those numbers....there are several 928's out there that make that much power or more...a stroker or supercharger should do it for way less than 75K!
