Normy -
Very cool insight.
I have an anesthesiologist colleague I work with at the hospital. He knows I have (and love) a 928. Recently he came up to me, under full sail, to let me know in no uncertain terms that he just bought himself a year-old Vette - with sort of a, "So Hah!" tone to his voice.
I learned a while ago that the very best response to this type of situation is to cheerfully, enthusiastically, and genuinely show interest and respect for the other guy's choice. It removes any possible reason for him to declare war, you often end up making a friend (and I've always found friends to be more fun than enemies), and you quite often learn something interesting about another marque.
I think it's often a matter of good old human pride that makes us respond otherwise. We humans somehow seem to be wired to always have to be Right! I suppose the love of money is probably indeed the root of all evil, but pride must be a close second.
