Default PAR in NY

I did a quick search of the archives and found some older references, some good, some bad. Since all their cars are on consignment, I can understand not being familiar with everything they list. Anyone want to share experiences with them?

I'm considering a 928 they have listed, though I think the price is too high. I spoke with Paul about it and he was very helpful and obviously had the car's service records right there. It sounds like a very nice car, but it is due for a major service. Anyone in the area want to take a look? I pay in the beverage of your choice, as long as it doesn't start with "Dom."

I have dealt with Paul and found him to be upfront. Most of their cars are consignment, but he does have a showroom crammed with everything from a restored 924 to RUF, and a lower level with "others". I was making an offer on a consignment, he spent a good 1.5 hours of their labor on a PPI, the seller accepted my offer then backed out, so that can be a problem. So you can get a PPI that is essentially paid for by the seller. You can get under the car with them so it is up to you as to how thorough it is. Having said this, if you are looking at the '85 5-spd, I would say that is a good price and it is probably as described and I couldn't offer more on site. I could't judge the AT, but it seems rather high even for mint. The other problem this time of year is the weather and getting out of here and all the way to Hotlanta w/o salt. They have snow and ice at this writing. Good luck.

Paul, the owner, is a nice guy to deal with, very knowledgeble on Porsche cars and a smart business man....I've dealt with PAR many times in the past (I bought my very first P-car from them back in '85) and I only have good things to say about them. Their consignment car prices are a little of the high side but they usually have nice, clean cars for sale (not junk).

He's about 1.5 hours drive from me but with all this snow on the ground today, I'm stuck at home...Most likely those 928s won't be sold anytime soon at these prices especially this time of the year. Ask Paul for more photos and talk with him about the condition of the car you're interested...Maybe ask to speak to the actual seller as well (if on consignment).

PAR can certainly do all the work and a PPI in house since they have a full Porsche service crew and they used to sponsor a PCA Club racer 911...I'm not sure if they still sponsor the car but they have the expertise in house.

Best of luck - Vasilis

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info. Yes it's the 85 I'm looking at. I do think the price is a bit high considering the car needs a major, but the price is dictated by the owner, not Paul. I'll be giving him a call today to discuss it further.

RE: the weather, I know it sucks. I helped a friend pick up a 2000 996 in Albany just about a month ago and the weather was gorgeous, if a little chilly. FYI we drove the car from Albany NY to St. Louis, had a great weekend. A 996 makes a great cross-country machine.

Now the next trip needs to be in a 928 to Atlanta!

I don't think you will find a clean 5-sp for less than 10K.

I bought my first 928S4 from Par Porsche in the fall of 1999. Very nice guy. I went in with my heart set on thisblack 911 Turbo and just couldn't get comfortable in the car. He pointed me to a blue/blue 928 in the middle of a floor full of cars. He then proceeded to have his guys move cars out of that showroom to put the 928 on the street for a test drive. I hadn't even shown a check book or anything at that point. Wasn't immediately sold on the car and came back three days later where he moved all the cars again having replaced it back in the same spot.

It was a consignment car, and he retrieved the records from a nearby Porsche dealership in Connecticut. 10 bent valves due to a broken camshaft, all the work done and now the owner was selling the car. It had like 69,000 miles on it. Owner wanted too much money and I offered far, far less. Sat for two days sweating that my offer was too low. Got a call from Paul with a counter offer, I came up a few hundred bucks and sat for another day or so. The final price was 1500 bucks higher than my initial offer and 5 grand less than his initial asking price. Paul had two other 928S4s in stock at the time and being that it was December I'm sure he wished the owner luck sitting on it through the winter hoping for a higher price. I was ready to buy and credit approved.

I'd buy another car from him.
