Default Oil Poll

Not to open any big cans...but wanted to get an idea of what most people use. Like a..holes, everybody's got an opinion, but they're worth noting. I've read much about RedLine, Royal Purple, Valvoline Full Synthetic, Pentosin, and all the rest...comparing Viscosity Indexes, Flash Points, Pour Points...etc. Regular petroleum based oils may be good enough, but I would love to put in something that will remain clean and protective for my change intervals of 2-3K miles. Suggestions???

Any thoughts on gear oils???

Hi.

Any oil you choose in the right viscosity range will work fine. Synthetics protect a little better at higher temperatures and allow for longer oil change intervals. I haven't found a bad motor oil yet. I prefer Valvoline conventional and semi-synthetic oils. I also like Mobil 1, Redline, and Pentosynth.

Again, just make sure you use a good Mann or Mahle filter and change your air filter according to dirty climate.

I use Mobil-1. It's easy to find and relatively inexpensive in 5-qt bottles at places like Wal-Mart. The most severe duty my car sees is storage, and the Mobil-1 seems to handle that just fine.

Just put in another tank of gas over the weekend. I think that's six or seven this year. Fuel prices and oil costs have a very minimal effect on my costs of 928 ownership...

Our engines were designed to have only two oil changes per year on Dino oil. I'm sure changing to Synthetic would make that last to once a year. Why else would they have put 2 gallons of oil in a 5.0L?
I go for 15w-40 Amsoil. Check out the Landsharkoz website for a write up about the oils and what to look for.

See Doug Hillary's posts on oil tests with proper condition analysis done at regular intervals up to (or near?) the recommended 15000mile change point. Mobil Delvac 1 5W40 at 15000miles (IIRC) was deemed suitable to continue use, but Doug hit the one year time spec, and changed it. Doing a fine job on mine so far...

Why 2-3K for an oil change - only in America!!!
Why not go with the Porsche recommendation of 12 months or 15K.
In Europe we would not dream of changing oil at such low intervals.
Best marketing initiative by the US oil companies and everyone follows - remember Y2K.

That should stir something up.

With 8qts of quality oil, a 2-3k mile change interval is wasteful overkill. Even though I may change the 4 qts in my 4-banger family runabout often, the 928 gets once a year/12-15 k mile change with Mobil 1.

For some oils and engines the 2-3k mile interval may be appropriate and even pushing it. Independent oil test I have seen in motorcycles using dinosaur oil show substantial viscosity loss in a few hundered miles.

For what its worth....I am "sold" on Amsoil. The price differential is negligible... and this is the ONLY manufacturer to advertise "extended" oil change intervals...(25K miles I believe I recall), I used this oil "Amsoil Series 2000 0w - 30 oil in my 3000GT VR4 on the recommendation of a Ford Motor company lubrication engineer, and information available from Amsoils web page. For me, the statistics are evident.... I don't care what the OEM specified lubricants are....facts are facts. Good oil is good oil, and better, is better. Nothing wrong with Mobil1 or some of the other top tier brands. Just they don't say 25K miles between oil changes is acceptable, and the industry standard lubricity tests clearly indicate the Amsoil is a superior product.

928 engines have been known to run beyond 300k miles in Germany with no speed limits and - at a price of $15 per quart - oil changes as prescribed by the factory. You better spend your time and money on other maiinetnance. Or to enjoy the car.

I'm with the extended oil-change camp. After reading Doug's oil analysis reports I've changed from twice a year to once per year. I use full synthetic Mobil 1 15w-50 and Castrol 5w-50.
