Default 944/928 rods...again

I'm in the process of changing out one of the rods in the track car motor. I have a complete 85/86 short block and also a set of pistons and rods from an 89 that I took apart a while ago(future use of the heads).

Was going to just use one of the rods from the 89 until I noticed a big difference. The 89 has no Porsche part number on it, but a "944" by the crank journal. Anyone ever see this rod in a 928 motor?

Guess I'll go pull a rod from the 86 short block.

My 89 rods are like your skinny ones. I suppose the thicker ones are better - but there are SC cars out there with the skinny ones, and noone has blown up yet.

*TECHNICALLY* I think the shoulder is thicker on the "thin" rod. Please correct me if I am wrong - not near garage now.

What are the weight differences? I'd be reluctant to use a different type of rod as the overall weight and end balance will be different.

The thicker rod IMHO is noticably heavier.

Be more than reluctant, never mix rods of different weight.
That's why I just pulled one from the spare 86 block, same "fat" rod.

So it looks like some 86 and some 87 928's have the thicker 951 rods. Do any of the 86 motors have oil squirters?

I do not think so since the tech bulletin states the squirters are a 'new' feature for the '87.

I'm just "reluctant" as I did this on an old Buick. Busted one piston when it was dropped and then put in a piston and rod from another engine. We were just doing it "for fun" so it's nice that it has held together for 14 years. I've always suspected a bit of vibration might be the result, but then again I don't rev it too much so it's not a big issue.
