Hi,
Some of you may remember a post about 10 days ago about a company on eBay selling 928 key blanks with the offer of cutting them from a photograph.
I selected the buy it now button for $35 which included cutting the key from my photograph.
I sent two high res pics (one of each side of the original key) and in return received my key in the mail today.
It fitted perfectly in all locks (ignition+doors and trunk) first time without any fuss at all. This was on my 89S4.
Amazing!!!!
I am really impressed.
Best,
Roger

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

Rick,
So do 928 Int if I send a key to them and they are a lot closer to me than this guy in Australia.
Besides I checked out there web site and its very impressive offering a World wide service with 1000"s of customers.
With 2392 positive eBay feedbacks and no negatives.
If one car went missing the cops would have them by the "short and curlies".
How safe to you want to play it Rick???
Hands conspiracy chalice back.
Best,
Roger

Randy,
I promised to send details to this company in Australia about becoming a Rennlist sponser (just waiting to see if the key would work).
Where do I find the info please?
Ignore my message I found it thanks.

I would have sent the key to Tony in PA, closer and a known commodity vs someone I've never heard of in another country
just my opinion
was glad to hear it worked out... could come in handy, take a pic of your key and burn it to cdrom in case you ever lose your keys...

Begs the question , how many people have enough paperwork to know the key serial number? I had my first spare key factory made from the serial on the invoice.

I had the factory try three (count 'em, three!) times to make me a key from the invoice serial. They never got it right. I finally gave up.

One reason I tried this service out was the fact that you do not have to part with your key.
In my case I only have one key for my S4 so it meant sending it somewhere and insuring it for a $1000 to cover the cost of replacing all the locks. If it went missing you would have to have all your locks changed - what a hassle.
You also cant use the car while the key is in transit.
I have just sent pics of my other car keys to get additional spares made.

I recently ordered two "with alarm" blanks from the party in Australia to supplement my one original. I found them very reliable and they seem to be serious about the business they are in so would expect them to protect their reputation. I will have the keys cut locally as I understand this is the most reliable way to duplicate the profile.
My next and bigger challenge is to have a key made for the glove box. I have no original for this to use as a master. Any suggestions?

Doug,
Do you have a place locally that can cut those blanks for you? I thought there was only one guy in Western Canada that could do that and he's here in Vancouver/

Glenn,
The service counter rep at the local Porsche dealer advised me the best approach is to obtain a blank and have it cut locally. He advised they use a couple of different locksmiths capable of doing this. Gotta respect respect a dealer that builds good will this way rather than than the ususal "we can do it for a premium price". I'm sure it doesn't escape them that the local Porsche club members are their biggest source of new sales.
If someone can cut a key from a digital photo, surely an experienced locksmith can cut one with the key right in front of him.
My only real experience with key cutting was when one of my university dorm neighbours cut a residence master key by hand after comparing many key profiles available to him. The mystique of keys lost all its charm at that point. Great fun having that access though, like when the entire res. population arrived for breakfast one morning to find a Mini parked in the cafeteria. I know...OT!
