You'd be suprised... wait a minute... you have an AT. Sorry, but I think you'd get beat pretty bad all around. I have a 5-speed. I can usually keep up (within a car length) to around 80-90 then they seem to drop the hammer and are GONE! The nice thing about a 5 speed though is that most S4's are AT's so on the highway crusing at 70mph, I can usually get a jump on them when going to 100+. With your 3sp AT, I'm surry but you're prolly gonna suck a lot of wind. It also depends on the driving you're doing. S4's have 70+ hp (or is it 90?) so of course they have an advantage.

If you are talking about a stop light drag race, I think that a US '80 auto will do 0 - 60mph in about 7.5 sec. An S4 auto will do it in about 6.0 sec. A GT will do it in about 5.3 sec.
If you are talking about an autocross run, you have a weight advantage and might win.

At stock weight and tune, you'd get beat hard.
The later automatic cars are heavier, but have a lower first gear.
My '81 is 300+lbs lighter and tuned a bit, and I could keep up with some punks in 32V cars on a mountain highway. But I was afraid to keep very close, because they brake a whole lot better from high speeds, especially after repeated slowing.
On a straight though, they just walk away. GT's especially, after 4000 rpm, they just gobble up road.
BTW: if someone offers to let you drive their GT, don't do it! It'll spoil you rotten.

If it were me, I'd go the Euro route, but it would be much simpler installing a centrifugal supercharger.

The Hybrid 16 valve engines using a 5 liter 85-86 short block Euro heads ,Cams, intake headers race exhaust have outputs in that range of 275-300 as I recall.

Growing up, my father had a US spec 1982 928. He loved that car - and it seemed powerful. It was an automatic, and I rode in it often. It seemed very fast to me then, this would have been about 1988 and the car was relatively new. He drove it in a very spirited fashion and I was always thrilled when he would punch it from a light.
In 1992, he sold that car and purchased a 1988 S4 - I remember my first drive in that car - the acceleration seemed violent. It was a 5 speed, but even so, it seemed light a much, much more powerful car. It was a whole different kind of fast - I remember being scared to autocross in that car because of the speeds he would hit.
I've ridden in GTs and GTSs. There is far less difference between a GT or GTs and an S4 than between an S4 and an early car.
