I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to locate a car I used to own? It's one of the original 1988 944 Turbo S cars - the silver rose model with the "interesting" burgundy plaid interior. I still have the VIN. Is there any way to trace where the car is and who owns it now?

I kinda miss the old girl, and I'd be interested to know if the current owner is in the market to sell.

 

I believe that would require someone in law enforcement. Carfax should be able to tell you which state the car is in or if it still exists.

If you know anybody with a big insurance company or somebody else who would run a registration database, it should be easy to find. I don't know how legal it is depending on the state because some have open records and some don't.

 

With the new Patriot Act, it's dang near impossible to get that type of info any longer.

I had to pull serious strings with one of my State Police patients to help me get info on I car I bought that somehow (sic) didn't come with a title.

BTW, a salesman at my local Porsche dealership tells me it's possible for dealers to locate newer model cars on the factory database (I guess for recalls, etc.) However, Porsche apparently didn't start keeping that info until a later model year than '88. I don't know how legal or ethical it would be for them to share this info. Doubtful I suppose.

Right after I joined rennlist I posted on the 924, 944 boards looking for my old 924 and got a responce from the guy that had it. He was even willing to sell it back to me but the timing wasn't right. You might try posting on the 944 boards, you never know!

So the car was in Highland county Ohio in june 2000, with very low miles too.....this is what I would do....since you have the accident report #, get phone numbers for every Police/Sheriff/HIghway patrol in that county....keep calling the information #'s with the report number until you find the agency that issued the report....once you do, you should (not sure) be able to purchase a copy of the report since they are public records....the report should have the R/O's name, address & phone number on it....give him a call, hopefully the number is still good! Take a bit of your time, but worth it!

Also if the car is a CA car (your isn't I checked) try CA smog check website...find the "check vehicle smog test history" page...you can search by plate or VIN to find all smog records...works great!
