Brian,
Congrats! I know you have wanted one for some time now and this is a very good deal.
Andy, was this the kit that you had shipped partly preassembled (e.g., injectors already installed, or something like that)? I thought the manifold r/r was something like a 6hr. job, even for someone with experience...
As someone stated the manifold is assembled with the intercooler in place. The injectors were not in it though.
Removing the stock manifold, including the studs that hold it down should take less than 1.5 hrs. Reinstalling the stock manifold would probably take 3-5 hrs.
To bolt the the SC manifold into palce will take less than 2 hrs.
It takes longer to tap into the washer reservoir than it does to install the SC manifold.
Mike, my old neighbor, garagemate and web admin is in Redondo Beach. It may worth it to offer him a few bucks to come down and help w/ the install. He has helped me with several and R&Red the prototype that was on his car when ever I made changes to it. He is a young guy living on his own and would likely want to help out and could probably use a few xtra bucks.

Andy K

Andy and Brenden, thanks for the offers, I am quite sure I'm going to be taking someone up on this.

Randy, there's a few options open to me. I keep hearing about this place or that place that is less strict about the visual inspection, and that as long as it passes emissions, it passes.

I've also heard about having it smogged at high elevations or in rural areas, but I'm not sure what that's about. Maybe another urban legend.

The other alternative is to take the SC off every 2 years for smogging. This is the path I'm resigned to take, so any other easier outs would be a bonus.

Yeah, that's what I figured.

If you want a closer location for the drop payment, I'd be willing to help. Heinrich knows me (though he may not necessarily trust me ).

Tony, it takes around 1.5 - 2 hrs to get to LAX from my house. It's around 100 miles, give or take.

Also, I took a look around the 928supermodel site and the pix. Seems pretty straightforward, other than I lose my windshield washers (?) (at least now I don't have to replace those check valves) and the throttle cable fix seems to be an area that could be cleaned up a bit. Tony, the way you had routed the throttle cable seemed to be quite slick. Think there's room for a hybrid approach? I would prefer to keep Andy's TB location, but something that looks a little more polished and less prone to either jumping off the pulleys or getting caught up in something...

Can someone talk a bit about the way the intercooler pump works? The wiper reservoir becomes the intercooler reservoir, and the IC pump circulates water out of the reservoir, thru the IC, and back into the reservoir somehow? And this doesn't build up pressure as does a normal engine cooling system? No reliability issues in this area? Tony, my guess is that you had a shop weld something up and resides in the space freed up from having the cold air intake thru the wheel well, or also in the wheel well?

...the devil is in the details

heinrich had the good idea to convert the intensive washer system to be the primary washer.

You will lose the after-squirt-3-wipe feature without the relay (just one wipe), but all other functionality is retained.
I'll be doing this for weight savings.

Pardon me for being so obtuse, but am I correct that you'd be using washer fluid as coolant? Hmm....is it my 944 or the 928 that has a crack in the washer fluid reservoir...

as for the intercooler system, its a little network of hose connecting the washer resivoir, heat exchangers, and intercooler. Basically, it just goes in 1 and out the other (like a series electrical connection).

You can still use your washer fluid... just keep the resivoir full.

Brian,
You retain use of the washer reservioir. Distilled water is best.
You tap into the side/bottom of the reservoir. The pump is attached to the reservoir. A hose goes through an already existing hole in the inner fenderwall.
It's routed to the front of the car where the heat exchaner is mounted. water goees from there to the intercooler in the manifold and then back to the reservoir. The wiring from the pump is routed through the o2 sensor hole and connected to specified wires in the fuse panel area.

Andy,

It helps, TY. So with Mike (a BTDT kinda guy) helping, what do you estimate the install time to be?

I've done a complete install from scratch alone in 12.5 hrs.

Additionally you could do some of it in the evenings like install gauges and the pulleys.

That's what I was thinking, sort of a "prewire" before the big install...

Tony, maybe you haven't figured it out yet, but I think your son was a result of your -- as you call it -- "torque tube project".

Ok, i thought if you were a bit closer i could lend a hand. I get to sit on call at the airport several times a month with NADA to do.

as far as the TB location. IMHO Stay with what Andy has done.
Ive said it before and ill say it again... A LOT of work was due to that "4 inch hole!" Looks cool now though and im very happy with it.!

as far as having things welded and made, thats an understatement! Biggest PITA Id say, the whole project gave me a better apprecaition for what Andy, Tim, Carl and John have done with there various approaches. Some time i felt as if teh only thing i didnt do was go out and mine and process the raw aluminum myself!

Yup, the Devil is in the details and in my right foot now...careful, he will bite!

www.lokar.com

makes for a nice throttle set up and easily adjustable.
