This is what is most interesting to me and that I find true too - each individual 928 seems to have its own character

1981 - US with competition package & Murf928 Supercharger
  • Purchased by my father in 1991/1992
  • I took ownership in 2001, shortly after tossing a rod bearing in my 944S (which I still own and have yet to fix)
  • It has been a rolling prototype for the Murf928 supercharger system and various other items we've cooked up over the years.
  • Converted to LH/EZF from a EuroS which also includes the EuroS intake & throttle body
  • Currently removing the supercharger in preparation for my father to use the car next summer to tide him over after his 355GTS is sold

1979 - US affectionately referred to as "the track car"
  • Purchased new by John Menard of the hardware store chain
  • Sold to a local friend of his, who pampered the car to the point of absurdity
  • Sold to a friend of mine, Jim Page who owns / operates Page Auto in Green Bay. He proceded to gut it and make it into a track car
  • Sold to a mutual friend of ours in the early 90's since he wanted an S4 track car
  • I was at Page Auto the day Jim left in the 79 to deliver it to his friend. With MSDS headers and open pipes...it sounded sweet. I said to my friend standing next to me: "Someday I will own that car".
  • Somewhere in the mid-90's sold to an employee of Jim's
  • I cannot remember who the next owner is
  • Jim's employee bought the car back in the late 90's
  • Sold to someone I went to HighSchool with somewhere around 2003. The car was in sad shape, interior was trashed, didn't run very well when it decided to start. No headlights (covers instead for track use). No heater, front fenders damaged from tires too big for such a low car wearing 9" wide front wheels etc....
  • When I found out who now owned the car and he dropped it off at Page Auto to fix it, I stopped by to see it. It was still wearing the custom wide phone dials made by our own Twin Turbo Todd back in the early 90's. Jim mentioned the current owners wanted different wheels so I asked Jim to try and buy the phonies for me. Jim called me a few days later informing me the current owner barley coughed up enough money to get the car running, much less wheels and tires. He traded the accusump, oil & trans cooing system from the car to pay the bill and get headlights installed....car sat in a garage for the next 6+ months.
  • Out of the blue Jim calls me: "I have your wheels, come pick them up"
  • I roll into Page Auto and see the 79 on his trailer. I ask what's up with the car and he informs me the current owner was broke, car had to go so he bought it......started to complain the last thing he needed was yet another project much less a 928 one (at the time I think he had 5-6 of them, two running).
  • Without hesitation I pulled out my checkbook, filled it out, handed it to Jim and said: "Let's do the paperwork now before you have second thoughts"
  • First stop, Zero to 60 Garage to fix the fenders and re-paint them, I installed a new front spoiler, my 5-spoke rims (purchased from Jim Page for my 944 back in 1997). Cleaned up the interior and installed Recaro Pole Position seats with Schroth 6-point harnesses.
  • To this day, every time Jim sees the car (which is often, he lives 3 miles away) he shakes his head and says: "I never should have sold you that car"
  • CIS should be coming off soon for a yet to be decided upon EFI system. Once complete the supercharger will be installed.

1989 - The infamous "Wedding Car"
  • Lorelei and I were married in 2005, we decided to do a small, remote wedding.
  • I flew out on Wednesday before the wedding with my best man and his parents. His parents, Dick and Gail are my "remote" parents when I'm in the Sheboygan / Elkhart Lake area (where I spent my summers while growing up in Kansas). They also own a Corvette restoration shop which is how my parents met them, as my father was the president of the local Corvette Club when Dick and Gail joined.
  • On the way to Milwaukee, Jim Page calls me: "I found an burnt up 89 on the insurance web site, you mentioned looking for some kind of project and I've got too much on my plate, you interested???" We worked out the details and Jim agreed to do all the work and get the car to GB using a mutual friend who just happened to be on his way to Florida with his hauler.
  • After hanging up the phone, Gail turned around, gave me that "MOM look,,," and said:
"Young man, what did you just buy on the way to your wedding without talking to Lorelei first???"
My reply, head hanging in shame...."Another Porsche"
  • The "look" continued for a few moments and she turned around. We agreed it would be best not to mention this again until after the ceremony.
  • Not sure how to describe this scene......We were married in a courtyard on the water that was part of the resort we were staying at. The girls were all getting ready in our room on the 3rd floor with a huge balcony. Us guys were down on the ground level as they kept guard as I tried to make many breaks for the door and to keep me from looking up since Lorelei was going outside on the deck for photos.
  • Not sure who, but someone up in the room mentioned the "new" car. At this point our photographer made a B-line for where we were, shared the news and my brides current state of mind.......
  • At this point all of the grooms men started to help me plan an exit strategy.
  • Long story short, everyone calmed down, and the ceremony went off without a hitch.

Here is the car in question:

Proof it all turned out good....wedding photos with a hint at what the next car in the garage would be:

We all learned something that day....getting a bride out of a car with hot side-pipes without her bursting into flames requires at least three people.
