Hello all,
I put together a movie from the Gambler's Run Open Road Race.
This is mostly in-car video with some stills, text and music added. I
don't know if anyone is interested in this kind of stuff, but I figured I
check here. It about 40 minutes long and is available in VCD (mpeg-1)
or SVCD (mpeg-2) format. Most of the newer DVD player will play this
disk on the TV, some of the not so new ones will play VCD format,
and old play will not play either. There is also software available that
will play these on your pc.

I put up a couple of samples at:
http://sis125.berkeley.edu/928/2004-...-START-vcd.mpg
http://sis125.berkeley.edu/928/2004-...-CONES-vcd.mpg
They are about a minute long and 12 mbs each. By the way these are in
mpeg-1 format, mpeg-2 is a lot clearer, but takes more space. If anyone
is interested I'd sell the disk for $10 each and $4.30 ship by Priority Mail (US only).
I'd take PayPal, cash or check. This is a hobby, so I'm just look at recover the
production costs. I don't think I could make a living out of it, or even pay for a
set of new tires....
About the event, the course was a little over 90 miles in length, I was
running in the 155 avg mph class, with a 168 mph tech limit and a 125 mph
minimum speed. The elevation is around 6,000 ft with an elevation
change of about 800 ft. The wind was minimal on the North bound leg
but with a 10-15 mph head wind on the South bound leg.
For those of you that want to see what it's like to run an ORR race in a
Supercharged 928, here's your chance. Just email or PM me if you
would like to get on.

Cool videos! How much of an improvement in horsepower and top speed does the supercharger give you? Also how did you get past the CA smog laws?

George,
Great track!
Question on your SC setup; on your homepage, you write:
"So far I've only gotten 3.7 psi boost with 330-340 rwhp (~425 at the engine)... This Fall I'll be working on removing restrictions in the intake and hopefully getting 8 psi boost (and 410 rwph). This winter I'm planning to install racing seats (should be 50-70 lbs lighter) and an Ott X-pipe with high flow cats. The x-pipe has added about 10% more rwph in other supercharged 928s. I'll also install a cooling fan on the intercooler radiator."
Why only 3.7 psi boost? Restrictions in the intake or exhaust would raise the observed boost pressure, no? If you have the 8# pulley on there, you should be seeing 8# unless your belt is slipping, your blowoff valve is open, or you have some loose plumbing leaking air.
The gains from installing the Ott pipe and high-flow cats is inspirational! It almost offsets the 15% loss from a 5-sp transmission. That would put me a tick over 530 RWHP... nice! What is the total cost for that project?
Where did you install your IC radiator? Right in front, down low in the nose? The fan won't help much at the speeds demonstrated in your video
but I too want increased cooling there and plan on a larger radiator. My IC fluid temperature averages about 30F over ambient; have you any info on your fluid temp?

What are you using or how ar you measuring that?
Great videos George. Even in that short clip i have respect for the "nads" it takes to do that. 148...162..blind hill a ahead!
perhaps this video will be good "recon" for me.
Nice.

Tony, or you can download the course notes from http://www.openroadracing.com/
You're close enough to enter these. Go for it.

George, the acceleration from a standing start looks to be substantially improved, as compared to the Bonneville event you and I did last year. Appears to be much more linear and smooth, not to mention quicker! Hope you can get it all sorted out for next season, I know you were under the gun this year.
If anyone is planning to attend next summers events, the first is scheduled for May 8th (I think) so start thinking early. There are plenty of things to get ready for your first race, so just let one of us know and we will be happy to help guide you. (I was getting things in order 6 months before my first race.) Make a list, there are a lot of little things that can be forgotten. Hope to see some fresh faces out there!

Great job, George!
To anybody who is titillated by what George has shown, I will second that ORR is a blast and challenging to do well. These clips are only a small taste. The full CD would show you that the course has a number of interesting features that require careful planning.
The 928 is just about the perfect car for this type of driving. My target is 15 MPH slower than George, but that is about the safe limit for a solo driver, and I do get to exploit the limits of an essentially stock S4. With a navigator to bark out warnings about the blind turns ahead and help keep track of time (for hitting the target speed), I could shoot for a higher target, but I would run out of steam at 145-150 average as a target. That's why George installed the SC, which I had the pleasure of helping him install along with Dennis Kao and Tom Cloutier.
People come from all over the US to run in the ORR events in Nevada (where I run with George, Tim Dey, Paul Mooradian, Dave Lomax, Rich Sanders, and other 928ers) and Texas. This is where Susan and Marc Thomas hit over 209 MPH in the White Car. It will probably be a long while, if ever, before another 928 challenges that record, but 928s have been doing exceptionally well, now winning regularly in several speed classes. We've got the car, and apparently the brains and skill, to win these events. Paul, Tim (with Cheryl), and George all won their classes in the recent Gambler's Run.
So, if you think you might be interested, get George's CD, visit MKM Racing's website and take a look at this quick overview of ORR George and I prepared earlier this year.
George, could you give us a link to your PayPal account so we can order directly?

Bill and others,
Thanks for the interest, my Paypal address is
jorj7@sis125.berkeley.edu
Make sure you specify the format (VCD of SVCD) and
the address to send it to.
Dave,
Yes the long version has the mph scrolling throught it. The
VCD has a Pink Floyd sound track, the SVCD is higher resolution
and filled the whole disk (700 MB), so no sound track during the
in-car video.
Brian,
I'm only running 3.7 psi boost with an increase of 70-80 rwhp, the top
speed I've seen so far is 176 mph on the GPS, but since I'm limited
to 168 during an ORR event, I have plenty of buffer. The car should be
able to hit 185 mph, but I haven't done it yet. I took the s/c off to get
smogged. It took about 5 hours to take it off (with i/c, injectors, fuel reg,
etc) I could probably do it quicker now.
O/N,
My i/c radiator is in the passenger side wheel well. I've cut a opening
in the front air dam and in the splash guard, but it needs more air flow.
I notice a 20-40 rwhp drop when everything gets hot.
Tony,
I used my gps logs and Mapsource software to read it and get the
right locations. I was going to use Dennis Kao's data logger, but
we haven't got that working yet. Tony it'd be great to see you
there next year.
