Great line Karl!
I'd love to upgrade to a 32V but I just dont have the *****.

It *is* more of a risk, to some extent.
I specifically looked for a Euro, with similar horsepower to the s4, just to avoid the risks.
I know my motor could still blow someday, and I'd have to pay to replace it or rebuild it.
But I don't have to be quite as paranoid about the timing belt.

Absolutely. They are all there. I have one set that I disassembled and another that I left together. Let me if I can help.

Well, we do actually. My 318i BMW broke its t-belt and bent all its (i think it was) 8 valves. The work cost me 10,000 dollars.

I would think the 10.4 to 1 compression of the Euro 16 valver is a definite interference engine????
so much for avoiding risk.....

Dave,
I am so sorry for you, with this mistune
But remember this is only a question about money and can relatively easy be repaired, so don't cry and don't part it up, if the car is sound as you said
Also remember for every 928 there is parted up, we have one less in our 'club' - Think before acting in this case and be happy, happy, happy, that's only a dead thing who can be repaired - not the 'end of the world'!
Regards from Erik in Denmark
PS: BTDT, Two time crasced cylinder no four

but it *could* bend valves, if there was carbon buildup, etc...
No one really knows until a belt breaks.
And if they do not bend, people call it luck.
If they do, they say it was just carbon, etc...
But generally, the OBs are not interference.

I'm guessing that a swap for the cam towers would be relatively simple compared to pulling the engine if the heads are damaged (which I doubt) or if the pistons are damaged (which I hope is not true).
If you do have the assemblies (cam towers) where the valves and springs reside, how much do you want for them? I'm hoping you said that you'd be willing to swap for mine for no cash, but that's so generous it's hard to believe.

P.S. I'm leaving work shortly to go get the car and have it transported home. My dear wife is willing to let me spend the whole weekend sorting it out, so hopefully I'll have information instead of speculation to share here before the weekend is over.
If I keep the car....I guess I've found the spare time needed to have the intake manifold powder coated.
(keep thinking happy thoughts....my optimism is beginning to fight back)

True for the OB..as in 78 and 79...and yes the discussion revolved around the 83/84 US 4.7 liter which in theory should be an interference engine...but according to Jim B..he hasn't seen one with bent valves yet...I believe those engines are 9 to 1 CR...
But as far as Euros go...as in 4.7 liter Euro either CIS ..as yours is ..or the LH variant for 84-86..had 10.4 to 1 CR and was an interference?....Not sure on the non S euro..4.5litre..probably not..but not sure...
I'll have to re-read that thread again...
Later,
Tom

The 32 valve head is also the camshaft housing all one part any valve replacement requires removing the heads from the block. The 85-86 32 valve engine still has cylinder head studs which means removing a head is almost impossible with the engine in the car. 1987> has head bolts which makes it much easier.

So then, I guess this means that the engine would have to come out and Tiburon may save my shark. (fingers crossed)

I have 2 pairs of complete heads in various stages of diassembly. I would be more than willing to have the heads dipped, lap the valves, replace the valve guide seals assemble it and ship it to you ready to bolt in. Let me stop by the shop tomorrow and look them over. I'll PM you this weekend. If you can determine if you need both or just one head that would be great.
