GT challenge at Infineon
I received my copy of the in car camera tape of practice laps (plus some race footage ). I have two reactions.
Mark Anderson is a very smooth and consistent driver.
He hits the rev limiter more times in one lap than I have in 100,000 miles of driving.

Its some great racing footage! he only runs TWO gears the entire race (3rd and 4th ) because he is running a GTS 2.72 :1 gear box, 2nd could have been used on 3 turns for quick launches, but he favored just smooth lower powered exits to reduce wheel spin. (however, i guarantee there was 1 second left on the table). the rev limiter was hit almost every single lap at turn 6, but its hard to say whether a shift just before would have helped. I also think Mark's rev limit is around 7k too! Did you see how the Saleen pulled away every time at the exit of turn 11? to mark's credit, he caught up to most everyone he was dicing with, under BRAKING!! Got to love his hit on Galati, sorry to say, he deserved it , big time!! (you cant leave the door way open when someone is FILLING your mirrors, and then slam it !)

Yeah, I have to admit my spontaneous response when I saw that was:
"Well, you had that coming,.... *******".
In fact I said it out loud and my wife heard it and said "what?"
My response was... "the 928 just punched the Audi in the head for being a road hog".
Wife drives an A6 Bi-turbo........she was not amused...........
Mark's smoothness and consistency is what got him the hard charger award and making up 10 positions he deserved it.
I got a real chuckle when the Caddy's hood flopped up on the wind shield after he pounded the rearend of the Audi......you would think Caddy would pin those damn things down for races.....Gotta admit though, Caddy has its kaka together in the GT class...........Friggin boats go like a bat out of hell......
BTW, where did you finish in the race? I saw you listed as a starter, but didn't see any footage of your driving......

Mark K, thanks for the expert analysis!
Gretch, it was an error that Mark K was listed as a starter. I you noticed, Mark A was NOT listed as a starter; confused me the first time I watched it too...
What a great tape, being able to see the in-car-action perspective, and then seeing the TV coverage of the same race. The center-punch footage of the Audi was excellent, and I felt he deserved it big-time too.
That Mustang has some ***** out of the corner, doesn't it?? Holy crap that thing was fast; I wonder how much hp it's putting down?
Great job Mark, hanging in there and plugging away!

"He hits the rev limiter more times in one lap than I have in 100,000 miles of driving."
That is not typical for me but for that corner I just did not want to up shift so I elected to leave it in gear.
"(however, i guarantee there was 1 second left on the table)."
I have to disagree with Mark on this one. It may be true for his 5.0 with but the low end torque of my motor I feel it is best to utilize the torque and avoid the wheel spin that would have come with the lower gear.
Hitting the Audi was definetly a low point for me but I do think he was at fault. As Mark said you can't have a guy in your mirrors for 3/4's of a lap, leave the door wide open and not expect to be challenged.
"That Mustang has some ***** out of the corner, doesn't it??"
Yes it does and I think some of that has to do with gearing but I do feel that my HP is in line with most of the field. SCCA does monitor performance in many ways and that weekend they were doing speed traps at various locations. My speed was not as fast as some and faster than others.

While the other guys were clipping corners and throwing up dirt, weaving all over the place, Mark stuck with a consistent line and drove on. Another 5 minutes and he would have been in the top 10. Another 30 or 40 minutes and he could have been close to the podium. I've noticed a similarly smooth style with Mark K's driving, as well. Given the HP, these guys would rank right up there with the best drivers in GT.

I second Bill's observations. Mark's driving looks very smooth and consistent. I think that might be one reason why the car holds up so well (the other being that it's a 928...).
It was great fun to see Mark competing so well with the deep pocketed factory teams!

Mark can disagree all he wants, but the fact remains that he was the ONLY car out there only using 2 gears!!! sure, it makes for more wheel spin potentially, but he is good at regulating that when he needs too. It also saves the car, which probably is not that bad, and considering the field, that 1 extra second (or possibly only .5 second) may have only bought him one place or so. the field was very tight, and usually, most of the passes were made on other peoples mistakes. Being the monday morning quarterback, if I kept my nose clean as I usuallly do in these kinds of races, i could have been in the 15th place range. guys were inconsistant and spinning all over the place! However, I was not allowed to run based on my qualifying time where I wasnt 110% of the fastest time. (I did run a personal best of 1:51.3 with the 2 second longer turn 7, but 110.7% over and they didnt budge to let me run. Thats ok, have to run that much harder at laguna if im going to make the field.

I really enjoyed the tape too. From where I was watching the race I didn't see the Audi pimp-slap, but when I saw it in the footage I was thinking much the same thing. Fortunately there was little damage. I saw the car later and it looks like the extent of it was some scuffed paint and the outer portion of the rim bunged up... at least for Mark! That Audi was shedding plastic like a GM car...
I too noticed the potential to upshift on the way to turn 6, but it's hard to say from the bench whether enough time would be gained to offset the time needed to upshift & downshift again exiting 6. That corner must be slipperier than it looks.
Overall, it seemed that Mark did much better when he didn't have to wait up for one road hog or another. Nice going!
