Default Motor mount replacement

Roger-
Have you started yours?
Got to halfway point today, next time on a lift for sure.
My excuse is that I have the manifold, cam covers in for powder coating and was tired of looking at the resting beast but am too lazy to wash & wax it.
Cheers,
Donald

Donald,
The Ford mounts have arrived and we are about to set up a tech session on the 22nd August at my place (preliminary date) to complete the job. We are also going to fit Chuck's S4 brakes to his car - that finishes the job started at Wichita.
Roger
PS Keep me posted on progress.

Tech session..... hmmmm, good marketing err, planning. Think people would drive 200 miles to get filthy dirty on my next project? That's the problem with living in an exclusive part of the state, no-one around to open beers for you, sort of like John Sthruthers.
FWIW, the passenger side of the deal was pretty easy. Also on my MY the oil fliter has to come off to get the mm out. I could remove the bolts but not the mount and then drained the oil. This was noted as an option on Tony's write-up.
Also did not remove heat shields or loosen pinch collar on the steering column.
I did not remove the wheel/tire assembly and not doing so makes manuveuring the cross member/steering rack more difficult.

Donald,
Well now that you have completed the task - was it an improvement?
How bad were the original mounts?
Did you have to use any washers (spacers) on the ford mounts?
Thanks for the additional info.
Roger
PS: I am supplying beer and food as well as the use of the pool for extra family members who don't want to stay at home while the significant other is under a 928.

Question Motor Mount replacement

Hi Guys, I'm about ready to put the beast back down on the floor after a couple of part days wrestling on the garage floor with the associated bits. I agree, the pass. side is a breeze compared to working around the all of the steering hardware - didn't remove any of it.
I have a question since you two have probably been looking up the details prior to getting at it. The bottom saucer shaped piece of the motor mount hardware -seperate piece with the bottom J-shaped "arm" is the area of concern. It seemed to me that both of those arms faced the same direction prior to dissassembly -forward or backward - but I didn't take note of that and now on reassembly it doesn't seem possible to install the mounts on the wrong side but the bottom piece of hardware faces fore on one side and aft on the other.
Everything seems to line up with crossmember but I haven't lowered the engine yet and can't find a pic in the Porsche shop manual.
Any thots would be appreciated.

Hi Deb,
Did you use ford (anchor) mounts?
Donald will jump in here as he has already completed the task.
I would be interested to know your symptoms prior to the work.
Good luck,
Roger

Default MMts

The symptoms were classic - engine sat rock still while vibrations and noise were transmitted to the cabin; the bottom of the oil pan was about 1 " below the lower xmbr.
On removal and comparing the new Ford units (hard Vs. fluid filled) with the OE there was about a 1" difference.
You will note that the locating pin (my terminology) on tjhe Ford unit is considerably smaller in dia. but I saw no issue with that and I did install two wide washers under each new unit.
Also no news here but without a hoist it can be a pain of a job but hopefully the improvement will be worthwhile, have fun - - - - -RIGHT.

Deb-
Will have to revert to you when I can compare the pieces, hopefully tomorrow. Did you mean the solid Anchor mounts are an inch shorter than the stock, or the other way around?
Roger-
I have not installed the new ones, had a Sunday full of church chores so completion will be end of this week.

Deb-
Have you looked at the picture on John Pirtle's site (http://members.rennlist.com/pirtle/svc.html)? Mine were like that with the bottom flange tucked under the hook, and the mount bracket is also symmetrical like the flange, so one set faces forward, one backward. HTH, or did I misunderstand?

Default Clarification of motor mount orientation

Yep, pic of MMt in its' hardware -pic opposite #31 in JP procedure document-is as I attempted to describe- (pic is worth a 1000 words) and it seems that you agree that one faces the front and the other faces the rear. Just couldn't remember their orientation prior to removal, thanks for the confirmation, now I can do the last bits and put her back on the floor.

Small but important aspect - - have you any method of keeping track of which bolt/nut and its' installation point while dissassembling various parts? I'm probably going to start putting them in zip locks with a note re: where they each belong. I find that I waste alot of time fitting bolts on a trial basis until I'm sure I have the right ones.

I usually put them in cheap ziplocks, snack size for small stuff, and use masking tape & a sharpie for labeling. The bigger ones I set next to their resepctive wheels & hope they are still there.

I usually just put them all in a small container, but on big jobs an egg carton or ice cube tray may be called for...
