I am going to need new mounts soon. I talked to my mechanic ( I dont have the knowledge to tackle this) and mentioned the Ford mounts and he said he wouldnt touch them. He will only use oem mounts. Other than the cost of the mounts, whats the difference between the two?

Default MMTS

The locating pin on the Ford mounts is smaller in diameter than the OEM but I've not heard of any negative impacts and just finished doing mine using Ford mounts - saw no concern.
Do a search for Ford MMts, there are many board members here who have used the Ford mounts and I'm not aware of any complaints over a number of years of use, however I seem to recall some complaints - short life span- with OEM units.
It may be possible that your wrench is able to turn more of a profit using OEM's?

He typically puts very little markup on parts if any ( I checked). He just gets a nice hourly rate. He has been very good to me over the years. I hadnt heard of shorter life from oem, so that is new. I think he is maybe just a purist at heart. What kind of price do the Ford mounts go for?

How about $50 each compared to $275? Devek may still have a sale on OEM mounts for $150 if you must have them.

Let's hope dishonest 928 mechanics don't catch on and start charging their customers full price for OEM, use the Fords and pocket the change.

My mechanic is straight up. He is the one that does a lot of work on Mark Andersons race car. He is the 928 guru of southern California. 29 years of experience working on race cars and 928 race and street cars. Have to have some respect for his opinion. It does make one wonder what significant difference there could be. Still undecided. Will research it more.

Perrys4:

I don't think Greg would risk his reputation by substituting the Ford mount.

Don't mean to get too off topic here, but I don't see why his reputation would be at risk. He didn't design or manufacture the motor mount, all he has to do is install it properly. I would think his reputation would be "enhanced" by being willing to try an "innovative" solution to save his customer several hundred bucks. Just my .02 cents.

Perry: He's stand up.
Then why don't you ask him for his thoughts to justify the OEMs? Sounds like a welcome input on this issue which has lots of interest here.

All I could get from him at the time (I didnt press him ) was that he has had bad luck with some other aftermarket products. One thing he wont do is turn rotors. He puts new ones on. Too many customers who wanted rotors turned and then came back two weeks later complaining about chatter in the brake pedal. He is very innovative. Has worked out a fix for the traveling torque tube. Has been making the fix on most cars he repairs. He is a very stand up guy. Only does high end work. Was putting a 105,000.00 crated motor and drive train in a GT-2. That is why I lean toward OEM. I dont have the knowledge so I have to find someone to trust and it seems a lot of others spending way bigger money choose him to do their work. He just has a reputation for quality. It hurts to pay the extra $$ but I feel comfortable that it is fixed properly. I wont even go into the discussion I had with him about radiators.....

Donald - MAJOR difference, the engine is now rocking (slightly) in the engine compartment -it didn't before the new mounts ) and the cabin is noise and vibration free. -See my post from to-day.
