Default What to put in the "shoe box" for a roadtrip?

After reading what Jim Bailey carries around in the hatch, I got to wondering what others consider "essentials". I swear I remember
seeing a Jim B. list once upon a time for the non-racer, but I can't
seem to find it.

I am thinking of things that would fit in a shoe box, still leaving
room for luggage, etc. This kinda lets out things like extra
wheels and transmissions OK?

Thinking of compiling a standard list of items to never
leave behind.

My contribution, or contents of my shoe box:

Fuel Pump Relay
2 Lug Nuts
Ignition Coil
Roll of 18 ga wire
Wire stripper/crimper
Wire splices
Texas Metric Wrench (Crescent)
Small and Cheap voltmeter
AA MagLite flashlight
Fuse Assortment

What do you guys consider a required item?

I've just gotten back from Hallett where I carried the obligatory assortment of tools, extra belts, compressor, jump starter, etc. and a torque wrench (for tech inspections). The only thing needed (besides the torque wrench) was a tow hook which I discovered was back in my garage. Murphy's Law in action. BTW the tow hook was for a Rennlister that learned not to accelerate too soon out of a wet curve.

How about the 928 Roadhelp list??

Trying to imagine life without duct tape is painful. Don't leave home without it.

I also carry a set of sockets, ratchet, extensions, various screw drivers, pliers, small "c" clamps, fuses, wire, crimp on connectors, electrical tape, light gage roll of bailing wire, anti-seize, jacket, hand cleaner, latex gloves (may need to go to the symphony that night), coveralls (same reason), magnetic pickup, spare ignition key, pocket knife, wire stripper/crimper, belts, jumper cables, compressor, allen wrench set, some spare sheet metal screws, spare interior light bulbs, shake-light flashlight (no batteries; just shake it and it charges), maps for almost any area of the country and some of British Columbia), bottle of denatured alcohol for cleaning windshield to enable V1 to stick, V1, Bear Tracker and CB radios, spare sneakers, blanket, paper towels, 1 gallon water jug to drink or whatever (came in handy on I-10 in Arizona once), flares, spare nuts/bolts and washers, spoon for eating lunch, GI can opener (what a great tool), fire extinguisher, star lug nut wrench, jack, plus the tools that came with the car, and probably some other things I forgot.

I am working on a portable jack stand which can supplement the jack and make it safe to crawl under the car.

And no viagra 'cause vegetarians don't need that.

Hey, maybe I need a trailer hitch and a trailer to carry more stuff, eh??

Hey, Mark. Thanks for the idea of carrying a CD of the WSM. I think I will burn a spare tonight and also of the PET and put them in the car. I could have probably used them when I was stranded in Florida last summer.

A six pack of good luck!

I don't know, maybe put it on a lift and take your time looking at everything before a long trip. Plus everything everybody else said.

Do we really need to go there again? My list is longer than most, as I drive threw the middle of no where Texas in the middle of the night way to often.

Shoe box sided? I would go for more than that!

Deffent things:
jumper cables(heavy duty kind)
jumper wires for the relay pannal. (you never know if your spare relay is any good, jumper wires are always good!)
can of fix a flat
air compressor (to use with the can of fix a flat)
3/8" set of sockets, socket wrench, and medium extenshion (can't get to some bolts with a wrench)
lug wrench
full sized spare (to be used with the can of fix a flat won't cover it)
torque wrench, 2" extenshion, and 17mm socket (for lug nuts)
trolly jack (beats the hell out of the Porsche unit on soft shoulders.)
peice of 3/8" plywood, (to put under the jack, stowes as the cover to the spare tire well)
tow chain (it doesn't take much more than wet grass to get a 928 stuck, like a rather soft shoulder you pulled off on to change a flat tire...)
duct tape (amazing how it'll work as a patch on a busted collent hose...)
1 gal distilled water (to pour in after busted hose)
1 qt motor oil (t replace oil burned up on that last 140 mph run that busted the hose)
1 pt brake fluid, just for the hell of it. (I needed it once, had a leaky switch, and lost all brakeing.)

And most of the rest of the stuff Don H recomended.

One thing I feel safe w/o, is a spare coil. They rarely go out by themselves. Usualy, it seem something kills them, and you can bet what ever killed the coil, will kill your replacement.

Can't add anything else to this list of interresting contingency items: If I did, it would be easier to hire someone to follow me around in a chase vehicle than carry all this stuff. Then all you need carry is a GPS locator. You have prompted me to rethink my 'stash' of emergency items.
Two comments caught my eye - Ron, saying " ... latex gloves (may need to go to the symphony that night), coveralls (same reason), ... " Personally, I think that a little too conspicuous a dress code for the symphony, even for a 928 driving vegetarian: perhaps you should add a black tie, cummerbun and black sneakers- to go with the white gloves
Viribus - blasting around Texas in the dead of night, you will be sadly S.O.L. taking your flat off with a 17mm socket! - try a 19mm.

HA! HA! HA!

Garth:

The gloves and coveralls are for wearing OVER the proper attire. Or for my date to wear so she won't ruin her formal dress as she is fixing my car.

I did think of more stuff to carry. I usually have some form of nourishment in the car in case I am stranded. I stash it under the cover for the amp that is no longer there next to the passenger seat.

A cell phone and/or two quarters.

Go. Have fun. Don't worry about the car.

Turns out I didn't need anything except the XM Radio (which was very nice to have) and gas money.

Did 550 miles this afternoon from Dallas to New Orleans, barely dropping below 90 the entire trip. Not a single problem, great drive!

I love this car!!!

Jay,
You'll be fine...get out there and drive it Dude
Your s4 is a baby @ 41k miles and it has been well-maintained to boot.

Heck, I just drove mine from FL to NC (SITM 2004) and then drove another few hundred miles downstate to Tampa and back (weekend trip) without batting an eye. On the latter trip, I had a coil wire slip off on the return trip and caused me a few minutes of grief but the problem was easily chased down and remedied...afterwards the car ran like a top again.

A well-sorted 928 is very reliable...but in case of an unlikely event, I always have my cell phone, loose change, AAA Plus card (100 mile towing radius for "FREE"), AMEX/VISA/MC, 928 Road Help List (newly acquired), and my own "shoe box" of tools and parts (key relays, fuses, flashlight, pocket knife, assorted tools), 1 gallon of pre-mixed coolant, with me...

Bon Voyage!
