Default Ott Droplinks question.....UPDATED with the results!

I have the Ott droplinks on all 4 corners. We have a DE this weekend and I would like to tighten her up a little.

Anyone have measurements/pics/etc of the min/max on the adjustments?

Any recommendations? Our DE is at an abandoned airfield. Essentially a 1+ mi open road course. Speeds can hit 125+. 3 sections where you can hit triple digits. Here is a "artists rendering". (THE BEST PLACE TO TAKE MY SHARK!!! I AM STOKED!!!)

I tried responding last night but the server was acting up. Really, this is going to depend so much on your driving style and surface conditions that it's going to be really hard to give meaningful advice.

In general though, if the car is understeering, tighten the rear bar or loosen the front. If your car is oversteering, tighten the front bar or loosen the rear. Tighten means move the link closer to the pivot point, loosen means move the link further from the pivot point.

Given these cars' seeming propensity to "plow" or understeer (IMHO, anyway), I would loosen the front and tighten the rear. It should make it easier to use throttle-induced oversteer if necessary.

Has anyone gotten the front too loose and the rear too tight where the car stopped feeling neutral (at best) and started to feel squirrelly?

I left mine neutral on both the front and the back, and just enjoyed having the stiffer links over stock. Handling was much improved, and turn in on the corners was a lot more precise. When i get a better feel for what the car and I are doing then I'll start adjusting them.

Tim - this is at Bronson Field - Blue Angel Recreation Area. It is just west of P'cola....almost to Alabama.

You should consider a road trip!!!

Lock it down front and rear. your 928 will plow anyway, so better to get as much as the roll out of the car that you can. especially, if the track has no real hard meduim speed "pushy" turns . (see laguna turn 2,3,5)
if you dont have sticky 275 rubber up front, the 928 pushes in some turns, (not all of them, as it is BULLET in most all turns, even slow turns)

I have ott links on all 4 corners. I experienced some oversteer after the installation. Definately a better feel, and worth the investment. On another note, if you have ever taken your shark through the carwash (gasp) you have probably heard the droplink end scraping on the guide rail. The ott link has a plate that protects the end, so your car is more carwash friendy.

Hans!
GASP is right....doesn't the 928 owner's manual say NO AUTOMATIC CARWASHES (except brushless versions)? Please post a link to the info on the OTT droplinks. TIA!

Mark,
Glad the SITM photo CD made it to you...
Can't make the roadtrip this weekend but maybe someday we'll get out to see you and Paula. I'm a big Blue Angels fan...are they still based in Pensacola (Eglin AFB)?

Cheers,
Tim

Tim - YEP - Blues are still here at Pensacola NAS. "EGLIN" is the AFB 40 miles east of here.

THE BEST Blue Angel show of the year is coming up SOON. Over Pensacola Beach - weekend afther the 4th of July. They'll pack 300,000 folks on the beach. IF you come up for it - plan on heading to the beach about 4-6 hours BEFORE the show starts. Otherwise - you'll be watching it from stopped traffic 10 miles away!

FYI - here's a link to their site: http://www.blueangels.navy.mil/flashindex.html

Tim -

Louie Ott has a website - but it is under construction. You can get the droplinks from Dave and Jeannie.
Here's the link to the info on the 928 Specialists website:

I really cranked mine out last nite. only 10 full turns screwed into each end - IS THIS ENUFF??? It really flattened her out! But - proof in the pudding at the DE tomorrow!

Hmmm--

Make sure you aren't confusing the number of threads engaged into the rod ends with how to adjust the links for stiffer/softer. The rod ends need to have --at least-- 1.5 diameters of the link threaded into them. After that, with the car sitting in a neutral attitude (no lean from side to side, on a level surface, steering straight ahead), the rod ends get threaded in or out a little so they bolt up directly to the bar with no push or pull-- the bolts go right in.

To get the bar stiffer, move the rod end connection closer to the pivot point of the anti-roll bar itself. That's the same as farther from the end of the bar. For softer, move the end closer to the ends of the bar. Both links at the ends of the same bar need to be the same distance from their respective ends of the bar so that the loading is even from side to side.

More than a few folks have distorted/bent or even broken the original front sway-bar mount when using aggressive settings in aggressive driving situations. If you find yourself with a lot of side loading and manage to hit a good bump at the same time, the already-loaded bar will try to transfer even more load to the other side. At that point you are loading the sway bar mounts about as much as possible, maybe more than the thin metal can manage. I know Devek has a weld-on bracket that takes care of this after the old mounts are cut away, so keep an eye on those mounts and know that there is a good fix available.

Have fun tomorrow!

Thanks for the info Mark and the spelling correction....Eglin AFB

Have fun at the DE!!! Please report back with your "results" and "a$$ometer (seat-o-the-pants) impressions of your dial-in of
the rear drop-links.
Best,
Tim
