Okay.
I need to drive another 928 while I am doing my 89 "RS or Club sport Supercharged Kompressor whatever" project.
I should think 2-3 grand should do it?
Any info?
Brendan

I've seen a couple half decent 78-79 sell recently for 3-4k, bear in mind it will probably cost you twice that to ensure she's roadworthy unless a gearhead owns and maintains it, also, there are some differences in the early models that make it sometimes more difficult to get parts
just my 2 cents

Brendan,
How 'bout an 83-84? Plentiful (relatively speaking) and sometimes available in the lower end of the 4K range. Obviously not a concours ride, but perhaps maintained.
You could of course, get something pretty decent that has been maintained for somewhere in the 6K range, then it would be far easier to unload when you are done with it.

Brendan,
I know you must be in withdrawal and this might be considered heresy on the forum.
BUT!
Why don't you look around for a late 70's to mid 80's bug.
Something with a roll top sunroof, maybe.
They are urban assault vehicles in sheep's clothing.
If you have never owned one they go like hell, easy to maintain and parts are still available everywhere and especially in California.
Iused to roar down that wide cobblestone street into Stuttgart near the Stadtplatz -Nicole you know the one, coming in from Pattonville and 7th Army Headquarters side of town -Echterdingen side?-.
Seriously, Brendan, those puppies handle extremely well, have more power than you would normally believe, park easily in small places, and are much roomier than the sHARk. Functional back seats, I carried both of my munchkins in car seats back there, trunk space up front and they a real easy to work on and soup up -Say Dellorto carbs.
I don't know about the Auto's but the standards were always a hoot.
In a pinch a Golf GTI -they are faster and handle better but the Bug is a true sleeper.
Try one, you'll love it!

Wow. Some responses. Nice.
The reason I want a 78 is because its the first year. I can handle that no problems. I have my 89 in 1000s of pieces. I am starting to know these cars inside and out.
SO the prices are going up?

Brendan,
BTW
That 79 , Green Euro I was looking at prior to buying the white 81' bid over my $8600.00 MAX -and over the top- bid to $9600. when I last saw it rising.
It was gorgeous, with fairly low miles, but someone wanted it BAD to bid in the $10k range, the value seems to fluctuate like the 86 - 86 1/2 my cars.
It seems like a convergence of factors.
Quality, a couple of real anxious bidders, and availability.
All it really takes to knock the price down is a desperate seller or two.
If they are selling sharp examples for cheap all the 'marginal one's drop in price like rocks.
Remember the buyer bidding frenzy is very real.
OK, so you don't like the Bug idea.
How about a Mazda 929 in good shape?

No John, I like the big idea. I just really like the 928 in the early years, and I know them inside and out. A leased car for Clare that I never touch, and my two old horses.

Just sold/ traded my 78 5 speed VIN# 347 for a 92 Harley XL1200 Sportster. Value of 4500. Just put new rack and tie rods in it plus fixed Altenator and new wiring to the unit. S4 wheels, Bilstiens, Weltmiester "SP" springs, Borla, K&N, New injectors, all new shift bushings, New trans 10000 miles ago, New battery, "S" front brakes with 55bar rear bias and hawk blue pads.

IMHO. Save your money and put it into your current project. 3K will get you quite a few parts for your "project"
Murphy's law says you buy a 79 then get on top of a slippery slope, looking down hill. Each slip down the slope costs you more money and time away from the main project and objective.
The longer you dont drive it, the greater you miss it and the more motivated you should become to finish it. I ve had mine down for about 2 weeks and miss the hell out of driving it. I delayed working on my car for so long for that reason and now between work and a WHOLE BUNCH of family commitments im on a real, REAL time crunch to get it all bolted back together for the IOC in July.
my$9.28 worth.

Heh. This 78 would just be for a daily driver. There seems to be some assembly required, but further then that, I am commited to finishing my 89 exactly the way I want it.
Thanks for everything guys.
