I know that the orange stuff is recommended. Would running the green stuff be a problem, though? That's what's in there now (or remnants, anyway).

The green stuff worked for many years before DexCool became available. Just make sure the green stuff is compatible with aluminum engines. If you decide to switch to the orange stuff, make sure you completely flush the engine of all the green stuff as the two shouldn't be mixed.

I believe the requirements for specific coolant and distilled water have a lot to do with the high mineral content of tap water throughout Europe. I'm not as as concerned about this where I live, especially since I use a low concentration (25%) of coolant and change it every 1-2 years.

It is not good. But not usually fatal. It's more important that the coolant has been changed regularly. Orange stuff is faaaar better. Green stuff creates pitting in aluminium blocks and heads. Not that I've seen any ...

The most important thing that you need to know is the coolant must be phosphate-free otherwise crsytals will precipatate out and eat your water pump and plug up your radiator.

My 83 had green in it when I got 3 years ago, and inside under thermostat, water pump, and heater outlet were pristine when opened. Switched to orange dexcool at belt time. I suspect regular changes are important, as well as choice of coolant.

Don't confuss with the Porsche (VW) green coolant which is phosphate free to the Firestone which may or may not be phosphate free. Only use phosphate free coolant in aluminum engines.
