Default What do I torque the water pump bolts to?

I searched, and found confusing stuff about 6+2, some other values, I'm confused.

What do I torque it to? In English? Version for dummies?

the default when not specified is 6 plus 2 Nm or about 6 ft lbs for the 6 mm bolts , they really are not very tight . But when you have 13 bolts holding the pump to the engine they do not need to be very tight .

Quite right on the ft-lbs Jim, however M6 is supposed to be 8Nm+2.

Thaddeus, DiamanteBleu is French I'm assuming ... my Diamond Blue Metallic S4 was "Diamantblau Metallic" in German .... Since I'm on a roll

Sorry to burst your bubble heinrich... but Jim is right, unless you want to quibble over 0.1 ft/lb...

BTW my manual says 6 + 2 nm for M6 engine bolts...

Test your torque wrench before tightening waterpump bolts. I had previously used mine to tighten the head bolts and although I changed the setting it decided not to click. Hence I overtightened all the waterpump bolts and then broke one of them. Luckily Jon928se came to the rescue again and managed to remove the broken bolt remains without using an extractor.

Now I test my torque wrench to make sure it clicks before tightening any critical bolts.

Sorry for the dumb question but, doesn't 6+2=8? Am I correct in assuming that 6 + 2 nm means 6.2? Or?

No, You first torque to 6nm, then to 8nm.

So, first torque to 4 ft/lbs, then to 6 ft/lbs

Hmmm... I was looking at 10-06... it says 1988 at the bottom.

Interesting , the default spec for a 6mm bolt in Nm was 6 plus 2 for early cars , 6 plus 2 for 80-84 BUT the 85 >89 tech spec book (as Heinrich so gleefully pointed out ) reads 8 plus 2 nm and 90 > is 8 plus 2 nm ........ to convert to Ft lbs multiply by .75 (close enough) . It probably makes sense , especially for older 928s , to use new bolts when you are going to properly torque them with a torque wrench because you never know how "experienced " they are .
