Default Tranny cooler

Heat kills a tranny.
Anyone have any input, suggestions BTDT to an aftermarket transmission cooler set up?

Right now the stock system (s4) runs into the pax side of the radiator, then out and up to the front of an air cooler in front of the radiator area, then back to the tranny. (i may have the path bassackward, but thats the system)

Im looking at tossing in a larger air tranny cooler in place of the small stock one.

Any tips..links to manufactures?
Will these be special fittings that will have to be pulled off a shelf at a secret porsche parts warehouse in the darkest parts of a german forest somewhere?

TIA

Hi Tony,

I will be using a custom C&R water to Oil unit, or a Laminova Unit. I am undecided on which, and I am in process of sourcing another laminova unit to compare to the C&R in terms of mounting.

Both will be plumbed with AN-12 fittings, and XRP hoses.

I agree HEAT IS THE ENEMY...!!!

I can shoot a pic later if you wish..

Or you could mount it in the rear so you don't have to pump 30W oil 20' through 10mmID pipe, 5mmID hoses, and banjo fittings:

click pic for thread: Rear Auto Trans Cooler 2.0
(Or here for the first version)

FYI: The Aeroquip adapter # for connecting directly to the trans, at least on the 3 speeds, is FBM-2246 (12mm/1.5 to male AN-6).

C & R is a company that makes all kinds of cooling stuff for racing. They built my engine radiator, and also do the same for Indy, NASCAR, etc..

I will email pixx of my setup to you over the week end.

What is the fitting size on the s4 tranny cooler specifically.....
The ones that go into the radiator?
and
The ones that go into the air cooler?

What psi is running through there at any given time?

Also, if i recall, the coolers arent always in the loop of the tranny fluid, isnt the routing of the fluid thermostatically controlled?

Where would you want to place a temp gauge in the system?

I guess i want to get a good understandiong of what makes it tick.
thanks.

Plain old tranny coolers are pretty cheep. Any specifics one should look for in one?

Ken a good placement except are we worried about heat soak to the fuel tank? I was thinking about (was it Tony?) with the holy wheel well ... might be good to place coolers there as ducting could easily direct air there 911-style .... of course, the same heat/kaboom question stands there too.

Another issue is that the farther back you mount the cooler the more heat and dirt you get from the engine and exhaust. The GTS has its manual tranny cooler mounted above the radiator and the oil cooler below the radiator. That seems to be the right place. And the lines are already available.

heinrich,

I've checked with an infra-red thermometer after extended idling, and there was no appreciable heat soak to the fuel pump cover or gas tank. I would be more concerned with the factory two pipe exhaust crossunder.

A fender mount has very little airflow, and more easily suffers from dirt/rock ingestion.
...

86_5Tiburon,

The GTS air/oil radiators are better the earlier internal, radiator heat exchangers but they are still mounted behind the AC condensor, next to the water radiator, and radiant heat from the engine. Add the fact that you are using HP/adding heat by pumping the oil to the front.

Contrast that to a rear mounted cooler, with low restriction plumbing, and 10 feet of cold air dilution.

As shown in the pic above, the cooler is mounted higher than the battery box and gas tank, and in a year of service has not collected any dirt or debris, or impact damage.
...

Eventually, I am going to reposition the cooler to the center, for astetic reasons.

Isn't that the oil cooler? I'll have to go look under my hood.

atb,

That's the heat exchanger core in the radiator header.
