Default Hello from Nijmegen, Netherlands - 1980 928S EU

Hello all,

I joined a few weeks ago but had not yet introduced myself. I am from Nijmegen, Netherlands, and bought a German 1980 928S. It ran around 170.000 km and has been standing for years, some paint has previously been restored but other than that it is a project. First car I ever tried to work on, so I guess I could use all the help I can get. First priority is to get it running and driving, improving the good looks comes later. As of now it is not even starting, not even cranking, so first order of business is finding correct schematics and finding out what causes that. If I get it cranking/running idle I would be looking at replacing the timing belt, oil change, transmission oil change, going over the brakes (slighty stuck, it can be pushed on flat ground with a lot of effort and 2 guys), fixing the door locks/stuck driver seat door. So all in all a lot of work ahead of me. Any comments/advice on these steps or in general is always appreciated. If there happens to be an early 928 owner in/near my city, I'd love to get in touch.

Kind regards,
Frank

Thats a beauty you might be able to clay out those scratches ,
so you dont have to mess with a repaint of the PU cover.

Is this car from Bremerhaven standing at the Landsharks shop in Geestenseth?
Nice car but a lot of work. I made the owner an offer but he refused.
Good luck with it, I have enough projects for one life already!

If I recall correctly, the interior is nice beige full leather and the car is an automatic.

Love the "original" Euro S model from 1980...

Wonder why we don't see (or have?) these open car trailers with the deck over the wheels that seem common in Europe? Looks like the deck is narrow like our units, but without the wheels and fenders hanging out to the highway lines.

Welcome, beautiful color, sounds like a major project, and so glad to hear you are committed to saving the car. LOTS of information on this web site, and lots of people with great restoration/maintenance experience and knowledge. One of - if not the best - car community in the world.

Good luck, and keep in touch.

Hi Frank,

Great car, looks like a solid plan but make sure to take this step-by-step!

I just finished restoring my '87 S4, engine wise maybe not comparable but still enough of the same car :-)

I live in Heemstede, I have a complete set of the WSM so if you need anything specific just let me know.

Enjoy your beautiful shark!!!

Great car! Love the early S!

Take your time and enjoy the work. That car will be a gem when you are finished 👍

Thanks for all the kind words! It is a bit of a mayor project, and I am sometimes wondering what I started with. But indeed I try to take it step by step - which is hard, but necessary. My budget only allowed a cheaper fixer upper, I wanted a transaxle with something extra. So either a 924 turbo, 944 turbo or a 928 (which is by itself something extra if you ask me). And I really really like the colour, the interior is reasonable, although I would have preferred black. Oh and I like the rims, anyone have a clue what these are? I wonder if they are 964 supercup/speedline rims, or maybe replicas.
A little less work would have been nice, but if this is the only option for me to get a 928 and to do some work on a car, so be it. The paint is not perfect at all I must say, some chips, cracks in the front plastic, the scratches you can see, also some on the side. But I will deal with that later, probably try to touch it up. I can't go for a perfect fix initially, I will focus on getting it on the road again. Inside is medium ok but the seats are not torn so that is most important to me. And yes Karsten I think you are correct. I saw it first on autoscout near Hamburg (not sure exactly where), but before I could dive into taking a look and how to transport it and all the other stuff it was gone. It popped up 2 months later on a private sale on ebay kleinanzeigen (Itzehoe, near Hamburg) for a bit more money than I perhaps should have paid for it. But they did replace the fuel pump and filter, so that is one thing done. Also took of (rather roughly) one of the trims on the side to look for rust. Yes also the trims on the aluminium doors and front side, probably no clue what they were doing or something. So that is my story, going for a working car, far from concours perfect but at least on the road and preserved.

These cars looks better without side trim!
Itzehoe is 30 km from my homestead away, but I did 3 weeks vacation on Texel till last Sunday so I was away.
My concern with this CIS car is the long stand time in a barn.

I know Jochen , the owner of the shop where the car stands a few years on the parking lot very good and this car lives the last 15 ? Years in a barn .
Jochen told the pre pre owner this car is a economical total loss if his shop with 100 € an hour should fix it with a bill from 10.000 € only for parts.

So the owner sells it to your seller. I made an offer from 2.500 €

Good luck with it, it‘s a very nice color combination, for me it was with CIS and automatic not a good match for my 84-86 928 parts and car pool.

I haven't thought of that but you're right, I haven't seen many of those trailers in pictures or films from your nieighbourhood. We who also loves snowmobiling here in the north also have these "inline" trailers for our sleds...

Welcome, nice to see another Euro S in here. Great colour with beige interior, nice! As a first project though, the 944 and 924's are better suited for that with less complexity. But you're in the right place here with your shark. Vast knowledge in this forum, with helpful people all around. Good luck from sweden!

Lovely colour! Good luck with your project.
I have an 83 euro in ‘Ruby’ red, I really like the No side trims look.

It does look nice without side trim, but in this image you do not see the holes left by the missing trim. So I will be putting it back, I like both with and without trim and don't feel like filling up the holes and painting. Your comment does make me worry a bit, I did not estimate parts costs to be that much. I was thinking more in the range of 3000 to 5000, but perhaps that is a parts list with a different end product in mind. Full resto would absolutely be more. Thanks for the added information though, any info is always appreciated. This does confirm my thoughts on where it has been, it looks like it has been standing dry but in a region with somewhat salty air. There is some light surface rust over some parts like screws and such, even on the inside like near the fuse panel where there is an interior air inlet or something I think.

@WestInc I do also think that a 924 or 944 would have been easier. I half regret this choice, and the other half is firm on this being a far cooler car. A 928 does feel like a more true and unique Porsche to me.

Look at my 86 S 155.000 miles thread for a clue what costs you have.
