I’m still actively surveying the local market for a roadworthy bargain, but I’ve become increasingly resigned to the fact that I probably won’t be fulfilling my 928 ownership dream anytime soon (for a multitude of reasons).
As a consolation prize, I recently came up with the idea of trying to rent one for my upcoming birthday (Aug 18–save the date! 😉 to take a leisurely day trip up the coast, going possibly as far as San Luis Obispo to have a meal, see a friend, and make it back to LA by sunset.
I’ve checked out local “classic car rental” services to no avail, so I thought I’d ask here: does anyone know where I might be able to find a drivable automatic 928 (pref with working AC) to rent for a day in Los Angeles?
Thanks for your help as usual, fellow shark-maniacs.
Renting a "beater" 928 sounds like perfect plan to completely ruin your birthday....
First of all, a "beater" is not likely to make it to SLO (much less back), not likely to have A/C (virtually the last thing that most 928 owners repair), and not likely to have good enough suspension/tires to make the trip pleasant.
(Keep in mind that the newest of these cars are almost 30 years old....and those are the GTS models...not likely a "beater".)
Additionally, most insurance policies in California have switched from insuring the car to insuring the driver.
(If you are not on the list of "approved" drivers for the particular car, the insurance is invalid. No more loaning your car to your buddy and expecting it to be insured!)
Convincing someone to hand over their "well sorted" 928 and getting the proper insurance, doesn't seem likely.
And if you were to find someone willing to do this, the rental rate would be astronomical.....near new Ferrari/Lambo rental rates.

Wow! Ok, this is a sobering assessment. I guess when I said “beater”, I was thinking of a mechanically sorted daily driver with cosmetic/upholstery issues, but maybe that’s not a realistic goal. Certainly the insurance situation sounds rather problematic… although I do wonder how the aforementioned classic car rental sites handle that aspect of their business?
Anyway, maybe I’ll just have to settle for a quality 1/32 scale model and a ~40th viewing of Risky Business. :/
You could probably find someone to give you a ride in one, and maybe, just maybe, let you drive. Likely not for the entire day, but for 30 minutes or so, I would guess.

Indeed! For that matter, there are a half dozen on the market here that I could just take for a test drive. I’ve driven one before under those circumstances before though… not quite what I’m looking for.
Ah well, maybe I’ll just go the traditional route and rent something sporty and contemporary from one of the big rental chains instead. The path of least resistance. Or stay home and order $500 worth of pizza 😂
I realize it's no 928, but I sure had a lot of fun today in the Scat Pack!
Then again, they are about as common as a pile of poo in San Fran S--- Hole.

California absolutely still allows "permissive use". The line breaks in most cases for commercial use (Turo, etc).
If this wasn't concours date in Monterey, ca...you could borrow mine...
The only things in my car older than 7yrs that matter are, pistons, rods, crankshaft, and stamped chassis metal.

Well....
One of my guys was driving his father's car and the left rear control arm broke in half...driving down the freeway. After bouncing off of the center divider, the outer right barrier, and getting hit by a truck, the car was....junk.
Their insurance company refused to pay for the car, since he was not on the driver's list on the insurance card.
And his own insurance was for liability only.
They were "out" the value of the car.
Mary and I raised an eyebrow, since we sometimes allow people to drive our personal cars.
Mary called AAA and they confirmed that if the car was driven by someone besides who was listed on the insurance card, they were not responsible, but the driver's own insurance might cover it.
She them called State Farm, Farmers, and Mercury and found out the same exact thing.
In a world where every company is looking for any reason they don't have to pay, they are not insuring the car but the driver.
(This is the reason why a lot of people don't take out the "extra" rental car insurance...because their insurance covers them, driving whatever.)

Likely more to it, for sure....I deal with people and friends with insurance issues from track days -many- times a year, and the fine details in a policy MAY preclude it, but it's absolutely not CA law, or in my USAA policy...and the only friction we hit with people sharing a car and something happening, is when the actual Exclusions go out of their way to deny claims on private property that also hosted racing exhibitions. (The General I think that policy was on).
It's buried in individual policies..the LONG form policy...but the default view on this in CA if not all states is the principle of vicarious liability. But major company policies..no, we've never seen it, or had it hinted.
I can get spicy WRT to whose Insurance covers what in the multiple liability angles of a property damage and injuries claim however...then lots of players are on the table..
Also, if a crash by your friend is not his fault at all, neither his nor your policy would carry the liability.

No effing way—that car is TOO NICE, man!
I appreciate that you would even briefly consider lending it out to fulfill a virtual stranger’s birthday fantasy, bad timing notwithstanding. (Incidentally, anyone know if there’s a way to legally change my birth date?)
But no, you’d have to put me on suicide watch if I so much as put a swirly on that thing. Amazing car. I hope it owning it is as materially satisfying as it looks.
