I was active on the 928 section here in 2001, when I had my '91 928 GT, and now I'm itching to get another one! I came across the pic below and was curious about what appears to be some sort of headlight or fog lamp switch by the handbrake. Can anyone explain what this is? Thanks!
All 90-95 cars have the wiring for them as well. You just need to add the switch and motors if you want to add it to yours
Not quite true. They all have the wiring to the control **** in the handbrake area, but not from the connector in the CE panel area to each front fender - 3 wires to both motors in common, and you need the motor connectors too.
How reliable is that system? Do those of you with cars that have it find it at all useful?
The hydraulic system does not stand the test of time - so most are non-functional. The electric system is more reliable but not perfectly so - with age the motors can start to do a bit of position hunting up & down.
I find it really quite useful if you have H4 lighting - with H5 lighting (or DOT sealed beams) its almost impossible to see what it is doing (and probably where you are going too).
Its really only worth investing time in restoring or adding this system if you already did the H4 ROW lighting upgrade with a sharp low beam cut off (that's the lighting it was designed for).
While you may be able to do this - I'd not recommend it for long term reliability., The later electric system can be refitted to any year. You would need the same 3 wire connection from the CE panel to the headlights, plus the 3 wire connection from CE to the handbrake area for the potentiometer. For equipment you'd need 2 headlight adjuster motors, the control potentiometer, the connectors for the motors & potentiometer and possibly 2 later style yokes for the headlight mounts (for early cars). The difficulty of install is really quite similar to running the new tubing, cleaning the old components and charging the system with the special silicone liquid for the hydraulic system. Used electrical components are probably still good - while components from a used hydraulic system are more questionable.
