Default Windshield wiper motor alternatives

visually, there a lot of wiper motors for Porsche and VW and others, that appear to have the same size, shape, and bolt pattern as the 928. perhaps the only big difference is the electrical connections and plug? the functions are very rudimentary with only 2 speeds, and an intermittent function. that has to be a majority of cars from that era? new motors are over $600. but 997, and boxster motors are around $100.:

here is one for under $40. for many VW models. anyone able to do some cross referencing? since Roger has been great at finding alternatives (like the HVAC blower motor) perhaps he can be convinced to find us a reasonable wiper replacement....hint hint

Would the reason that the 928 motor is so expensive be the 3 speeds? I will do some checking.
My first thought is to buy a used motor from 928 Intl. I have sold one new motor in 15 years so not a high volume part new.

Mine has only two speeds. Did I get shortchanged?

Per the sticker on the cowl cover, the motor was factory-filled with Shell grease. I'm in the hunt for some good German synthetic #2 in red. Worst case is Mobil-1 if the Redline isn't as good. Red grease is faster.

Rebuilding a wiper motor isn't a terrible job, just occasionally maddening:

agreed, but I have a noise that "seems" to come from the worm and gear, but who knows, could be the motor? its like a small stick in the spokes of a bicycle wheel.
wipers work fine, but noise is annoying

That's the sound of a dry crunchy bearing. (Unlikely the plastic ring would make noise?)

I have intermittent low, low, high. Two speeds in three switch positions. Four switch positions if you count the low-speed park available in the off position.

My 89 S4 has Plaid, the notch above High.

Seriously.. there is actually a speed above high. Oddly, I noticed it for the first time 7 months ago, driving in ridiculous rain (was almost home when it started). It went so fast, it placed enough stress on the 30 year old linkage to break part #4 in the pic below. It left the tab attached to the motor and separated the press-fit spindle from it. I've been driving my '87 - but need to pull the cowl and see if its easily tacked together again, or I need to replace it.

not sure what you mean by a speed above high? I have 3 speeds of wiper operation, as described in the owners manual.

why would dr. bob only have 2 speeds?

I have 3 speeds (up) plus intermittent (down), as noted in the pic from the owners manual that I didn't carry over.
When Hilton mentions a 'speed above high', I know exactly what he means. The 928 is the only car I've ever owned or driven (at least used the wipers while driving) that doesn't just have "low" & "high" speeds for wipers.
Medium is pretty fast. High isn't quite ludicrous speed, but it's pretty fast.

I wonder if Dr Bob has a broken or incorrect multi switch.

It would be hard for me to believe that Dr. Bob has an "incorrect" anything.
