Hi, does anyone know exactly what type of dampers this option 474 is?
Also, option 490 (hi-fi) and 494 (amplifier); what type are they, and where do factory install the amp originally?

474 shocks were red Boge.

My M474 are Bilsteins, gold.

Not sure what was used on the earlier cars with the 474 option , but the later cars had red Boge as the sport shock with the gray Boge shocks being standard.

My '82 Euro S came with the 474 option and had the gold bilsteins with hieght adjusters all around.

Thanks guys, I'll look tomorrow to see if the originals still are on (65k miles, so it might be). For replacement, are the red Boge's the way to go, or what else would be recommended?

FWIIW, I changed out the original red Boge sport shocks on my 89 S4 for Koni internally adjustables, and I really miss the Boge. In my experience, the Konis are under-damped compared to the old Boge shocks, even with 95K miles on them. The car will now bottom on hard turns, which it never did before, even though the ride height is unchanged and I'm using the original springs.

I installed a stiffer front swaybar to help with the lean and, although the lean is reduced, I'm still unhappy with the Konis when pushed in the twisties. And, of course, although the swaybar reduces lean, it does nothing for head-on bumps. In fact, I broke a front grill brace on the last funride from a spoiler hit. I can't recall ever bottoming from a straight-on bump before I put on the Konis. This is on a road I've driven for several years. The change going from the old Boge to the Konis was dramatic and obvious.

I find the red boge on the GT to be very nice for the street.
Some might think a bit firm and others might think a bit soft

I have the red Boge on my car with 474 as well, great for the street..

I concur, the sport shock option seems to be just right for the street.

I have red boge on my 87, after 130K they are tired, I presume they are not available from Porsche any more ?? Or they are $$$$$ ??

Didn't Phil T. have an issue with a Koni that was broken/incorrectly assembled out of the box?

I have been told both......still available/not available. Pelican parts still lists the part numbers though I believe. They are not cheap......$200 a corner that last time I checked.......more than double the regular shock price.
