Is it the emergency brake pads in the brake disc?
They could sit not straight in the drum.

the noise only happens over a bump. There is a louder clunk and then a few quieter ones. Imagine a loose piece of metal vibrating against the bodywork, over a large bump it bangs on the side of the car and then a few more times until it settles again. … that’s how it sounds. On smooth road there is no clunking at all.

I don’t think so, I had the hub off and the shoes seem firmly in place

I agree with Rob.

Grab the end of the exhaust with your hand and shake it up and down and left and right. Does it bang at all.

I know what you mean, it sounds like that... but no, Ive just rebuilt the entire exhaust and it doesn't bang on anything. Testing again just now, no clunks

Does the "tapping brake while in D at low speed makes clunk" point to something? help narrow it down?

I just tried rotating the half shaft and its rock solid. Parked in D, back up on ramps.

Then I doubt that is a half shaft issue albeit I would not rule such out and as I suggested earlier if you do not know when the joints were last greased and new boots fitted it should be on your "to do" list anyway.

Good luck with the investigation.

So the real question did you try to tighten the CV bolts and the axle nut?

I almost laughed when I read this post. Too many of us here already know that when a problem arises after you just did something to the car it is clearly related to what you just did. DUH!

Just to make sure we are on the same page here regarding testing the exhaust's clearance...

When you test the movement of the exhaust, you must put a LOT of force on it, like if you're doing bench-pressing, almost.

Take those exhaust tips and FORCE them to the front of the car and then back. Do the same upwards.

When I FORCED mine side-to-side, an S4, and I muscled it, only then did I get the clunk - I couldn't believe it when it finally happened.

I wasted a whole year on diagnosing it because I was essentially just poking at it.

If ithe noise started after the new exhaust was installed, more than likely that's your smoking gun.

Hi Swaybar,

I'll try again, but the new exhaust hangs lower than the orignal and its quite clear of everything - and the noise was there before I did the exhaust.

Hey Jerry, Yes, I know - unfortunately the noise was _before_ I redid the exhaust. DUH.

Yes, all nuts and bolts are tight. The noise is definitely from the rear.

If its not a 'known sound' I'll just keep hunting - I was hoping everyone would say "oh, thats your blah blah"

If you are casting the net wide then i would also include checking the gearbox mounts and also rear tailgate latch/adjustment and tailgate bumper pads
