As a diagnostic, I suggest that you have someone else drive the car while you get in the back of the car to listen for and better locate the source of sound.

As always, check the last thing you worked on before the sound started.

I have the exact.same thing. Need to investigate if it's the rack itself or the steering linkage.

Not sure this helps track down the clunk, but it made me laugh... which helps a lot

 

Yeah will do - Ideally I want to be able to repeat it at home, up on axel stands or ramp. I managed to do this the other day and tracked down the missing spring clip on the driver-side rear calliper.

 

Design issue with C/V joints, in the early 928's
Remove the axle and see if the axle shaft has been hitting the stub axle, when load is applied.
(It will leave marks.)

You can also change them from left to right to avoid the wear on the bearings.

 

Did you fill the tank with fuel before the noise started Todd? Long shot but maybe the weight change shifting the CV angle or something in the tank is associated with it?

 

Thats a very very good guess - I have filled it up more than previously.

UPDATE::for the moment I am stopping the search. After tracking down the missing spring clip in the rear calliper I am happy that this clunk is not dangerous. This clunk is something like a bracket/etc jiggling back and forth over big bumps. I will track it down over time and probably when I rebuild the rear suspension.

So I am still trying to track this noise down. I have recorded a better video (and it seems to be getting louder)...


From this, can anyone guess what it could be? It doesnt do it if I lightly press the brakes (or hard of course ). I have visually inspected everything I can get access to around the rear (the noise is definitely coming from the driver-side rear (UK car)). I havent taken anything apart as I will need to replace bushes etc and that is a big job that needs planning out. I have checked every bushing/mounting/bolt I can see and extensively wobbled the exhaust.

Any help appreciated!
