PCA market analysis in Panorama 791 - Feb. 2023
I wish PCA would do a deeper dive into the model variants....

There's a writeup of the black/black '95 5-speed that sold for $263K at the RM Sotheby's auction in Miami, in this month's Sports Car Market magazine - "The most collectible 928 is finally having its day". Followed by a brief design analysis by Robert Cumberford. Good to see some additional positive ink in SCM.

Agree with Darklands that the Euro S models need to be listed separately even if they were to lump both generation of the 16v together.
I'm also not sure I agree with their statement that theb928 has the greatest range of pricing variability across the model either. In the 997 generation of 911 you go from a base Carrera cab Tip trans at maybe 30k to a GT2 around $300k and that's only over a single generation period from 2005-2008. You look at all 911s from the late 60s until today and the spread is $1M or more.

The S3 needs also special attention. Also high power.
The years 85 and 86 with generation II seats.
86.5 S3 and S2 with big brakes and 2 middle mufflers.
I like the S style more than the S4 cars, especially the front.

+1 on separating the RoW cars and the US cars, I honestly don't know how you could compare them at all.
The best value and most rewarding experience for a curious first time owner would be a Euro S2 or S3 I would say.
Most desirable at the end of the day does come down to personal preference, however. The S4 onwards are too modern for my taste, and the OB too soft and needing more muscle. The Euro S1 and S2 are my definitive choices; original body, originally intended engine output, muscular design additions (some much needed angularity), great sound and power to weight ratio.

I for me rank the cars not from the value side but from the fun and driving capabilities.
So I prefer five speed because one gear more and not the lag and kick down.
Next I like adequate brakes so minimum are S brakes.
Generation 2 seats have more hold and are taller, gen 1 are softer and have a cushion problem.
Sound, the two valve cars have this special sound on acceleration, pure emotions!
Than we have the tractor like torque cars, S3 and GTS five speed and the cars who like rpm like GT , CS and Euro S. The S4 is between the two camps.
The rpm cars aren‘t much faster but feel fantastic.
I like the crazy color combinations of the OB, Pasha, the love for popping colors. For collecting fantastic.
But I drive my cars a lot and fast so this is how I rank the 928. After spinning around in a automatic after kick down in the wrong moment I don‘t want one anymore.
That‘s my preferences.

Maybe others with a bigger staple of cars can write their feelings about them or people like Greg, Colin, Sean and a few others who drive the whole range of 928 regulary on test drives in their shops.
