As usual, its all shareware. A pic is worth a 1000 words.
Since the stock sender was plastic, it wouldnt work too well on a metal tank. I found a company that makes custom floats. Works PERFECTLY!
It aint too pretty but is 110% functional. All hoses fittings meet the hoses at there stock locations. Radiator caps is still accessable as is the #4 cyl spark plug.
A true "cut out" view. Thats the hard board mock up of the tank i had made. You can see how the float was incorporated as well as the hose fitting at the bottom (a dremel sanding tube ..got improvise now and then!!)
This shows the line towards the hole and the room created by the new tank.
Was i sure it was all going to fit? Nope.
Its still going to be very tight. Dont know unless you try huh!

My next task is to find out where i want to put my intercooler heat exchanger and coolant tank for it.
Im thinking the tank can go just below the filter in the fender and use the "stock" filler neck in the engine bay. I would however like to have easy and almost instant access to the tank. I would also like to have a tank that has a large enough opening so i can drop ice in for when i hit the drag strip in the middle of the summer here. This option leads me to the spare tire well. I don't have the spare anyway as im running 18" wheels. The only thing in it now is my amp. I could fit a pretty good size tank there. I know these tanks dont have to be big but my biggest enemy out here is going to be the heat of the summer and intercooler cooling capability.
The heat exchanger may go where my cooling flaps are now. Im looking at having one made similar to the Ford Cobras. See pic below.
Only catch now is, perhaps finding some smaller fans that i can put across it so i can get continuous "heat exchanging" going on while at a stop. I also don't want to effect the the engine cooling by "plugging" up air flow to the radiator. I actaully havent started to look into all this stuff yet...Ill dig in next week when i get back home.

Don't get too extravagant w/ the radiator for the intercooler. This is actually the least important part of the system. You may consider using a motorcycle radiator. If you are going to go throught the trouble/expense of having one made besure to use water/glycol cooling technology.
As far as putting the tank in the spare tire well, it's a PIA. You need 3/4 id tubes running the length of the car witout kinks. This adds 20ft that the water must travel. The longer the route the water has to travel the less water the pump can move. If you put it back there you will need a very strong pump like the SHURflo Aquatiger SS and you may even consider 2 of those. As an example the Aquatiger will move 20gpm at 0ft head pressure and will move 8gpm at 20ft of head pressure.
The $55 pump from APE that I specified should prove more than aqequate if you keep the reservoir up front.

The problem with the tank up front is the amount of weight we are adding to the front of the car. I was also planning on the spare tire well area for the tank, and even more - the rear area in the fenders for the radiator and fan assembly. This way - yes, we have alot of weight relatively, and some complexity with lines, etc, but we are not adding it to the FRONT of the car.

Could you put an attache sized tank in front of the fuse panel, with quick release fittings or extra hose to facilitate getting to the panel if need be?

Minor detail. (yes many minor do added up..but not at my level and in a street car)
Full tank of gas..or 1/4 tank of gas...stock seats or aftermarket..Spare in the back or not...tool kit installed?
Way to may variables alreadyto start worring about the weight of a water tank.
If i could drive one 928 on a track then get out and drive anotherr with Oh..30lbs call it, bolted to my front fender i highly doubt i could tell the difference. If i could, my name would perhaps be M. Schumaker.
Ill try and figure something out next week.

Well I can't speak for other systems but my system adds less than about 40lbs and 30 of that (the blower) is behind the front axle. So I guess if Tony put a 3 gallon tank in the rear of the car he would ballance it out exactly. Provided he does not have the 16lbs of water in the washer reservoir, which he will not.
The pumps that would be suffficient for pumping the water from front to back are much heavier than the small johnson pumps. The Aquatiger feels to be around 9 lbs while the johnson (from APE) is around 2lbs. Again consider that you may want 2 of the Aquatigers for track use.
2 galons is enough for street use. The washer reservor is 2 gallons. Need more for track use? Maybe additional reservoir under the hood? KISS

Thanks Tony!! Wow, that is a very cool setup. Very cool. I almost wish I had a spare 928 to delete al extras like washer tank etc, and go to town like you have. One other thing. If the pre-S4 32V's can delete their fan shroud and use an electrical one up front ... so can we. And we have much to gain by losing the shroud...... yes?

I believe there is much less pressure drop due to friction losses in 10 feet of horizontal pipe , as I recall head pressure and flow reduction is for feet of vertical lift , like from the bottom of a well to the surface .

Thx Jim. I do know that the pump was not moving 20gpm when i had the Tank in the rear. Judging by the time it took to pump all the water out of the tank i would say it was more like 8-10gpm.
