Thanks. I'm not looking to make money here, and am only going to pull what I and other people have asked for. This is a learning experience for my son about junkyards and value, so it's more a bonding exercise than anything else. Hopefully he learns to look to junkyards before buying everything new as he embarks on a long-term relationship with his 1997 Honda Prelude SH. We already got an NLA control arm out of a junkyard in Topeka.

If I grab something for someone and that person decides the part's not what they were looking for, I'll put it on ebay. The financial risk is really low. I paid $5 for a taillight, $9 total for all four fog lights (one of which was essentially new), $10 for the rearview mirror, and so on.

I don't need the rubber shift boot. Just wanted it to get saved. Great thing you are doing here.

and keep in mind - they will crush that car after it's been on the lot about a month whether it's been stripped bare or not - at least that's what i've observed in the past

Hey_Allen already put in a request for quarters and Rob E. for the speakers in them, but if Hey_Allen decides doesn't want them and I can pull them, you are next in line.

Right now I have you down for:
  • center console and its parts
  • gauge cluster
  • door panels and cards
Let me know if there's anything else.

Matt,
What you are doing is super cool and it reminds me of when I was young and with my did harvesting parts from cars in scrap yards as a vital part of self reliance and physical skill development. We were not wealthy and kept our beaters going on ingenuity and practicality.
Whenever he was not guiding my hands, I'd be pulling seats and looking for silver coins - wherever change could be found, ashtrays, under carpets, glove boxes. ;-)
Another thing he allowed me to indulge in was collecting old hood ornaments and porcelain signs. Back then I thought they were cool and could usually have them for the asking. Found them at/ or behind old gas stations, abandoned racetracks, in garages, barns. I watched for them everywhere. Now I have a couple hundred of them.
All of this brings back soooooo many memories - thanks!
Decades from now your kids will remember and thank you for the gift of the many skills they are learning from you!
Bravo!
Dave

Okay, planning on going Sunday morning, so want to make sure I have the parts requests. If you want something and don't see it below, let me know. If you no longer want what's on the list, let me know.

No guarantee I will get everything; some stuff may be gone already and other pieces may be junk. But if it looks good to my eyes and I can grab it, I will. I'll send pics and if you like it we can figure out how to ship it. If you don't like it, off to eBay it goes. Prices will be my cost plus shipping for the parts below.
  • Locking gas cap - Hernanca
  • Door panels, arm rests, door cards – 982 GT R
  • Center console and bits in it – 928 GT R
  • Gauge cluster – 928 GT R
  • Rubber shift **** – throttlegrotto
  • Cat heat shield – throttlegrotto
  • Battery hold down clamp – throttlegrotto
  • Hatch release solenoid – throttlegrotto
  • Rear quarter panels – Hey Allen
  • original speakers - Rob E
Am I missing anyone or anything? Will it all fit in my 928 for the drive home?

Matt

That's a very generous offer. Thank you for being willing to pull and ship parts to keep the fleet alive.

A short list to add if you're still accepting requests:
- Porsche emblem on the top of the spider
- Wiring harness that attaches to the alternator (really only need the connector)
- If not claimed as part of the shift boot, the shift boot bracket that mounts to the center console on the '78s
- Upper and lower gauge pod covers

By upper and lower gauge pod covers do you mean the plastic covers for the steering column? The pod itself is already spoken for,

The spider emblem was already gone. I'll see if I can get the wiring harness. If I have to go under the car it's not likely. I think 928 GT R already spoke up for the shift boot surround as part of the center console , but he can correct me if I'm wrong.

Best of luck!

Especially for that first item! Anyone have any tips on removing the locking gas cap, in case it is... locked? If it is one of the later red plastic ones, chances are it does not lock anymore. I am hoping it is one of the early (78-only?) metal gas caps but I don't know if they are as prone to failure?

And, yes, thank you for doing this and for excellent reasons.

I have a spare early one with no key.

I would love to have the manual seats as cores. At the very least the manual slide mounts for the seats.

Just got back from the Pull-and-Pay. I was not able to get everything because someone had gone through the 78 since last week. Engine and transmission were gone. Basically, under the hood was picked clean. Below is what we did get. I will post photos in a little bit. Also, I think the most expensive thing was the rear quarters at $24 apiece including tax.
  • Door panels, arm rests, door cards – 982 GT R - Got passenger door panel, both arm rests, door cards ALREADY GONE. The driver door panel had been torn to shreds.
  • Center console and bits in it – 928 GT R - Got it and it looks pretty good.
  • Rear quarter panels – Hey Allen - Got both. Leather is not great, left side has a crack in plastic but both are complete, including the hangstraps.
Sorry, but I wasn't able to get the following because they were either already gone, not accessible, or destroyed:
  • Locking gas cap - Hernanca - GONE
  • Gauge cluster – 928 GT R - GONE
  • Rubber shift **** – throttlegrotto - GONE
  • Cat heat shield – throttlegrotto - GONE
  • Battery hold down clamp – throttlegrotto - GONE
  • Hatch release solenoid – throttlegrotto - GONE
  • Wiring harness that attaches to the alternator (really only need the connector) - SJyokel - GONE
  • Shift boot bracket that mounts to the center console on the '78s - GONE
  • Upper and lower gauge pod covers - GONE
  • original speakers - Rob E - Alpines in the front, Pioneers in the back. Mostly trashed.
  • Seat cores - Did not get. Just too much broken glass and too much work to get them out.
  • Porsche emblem on the top of the spider - GONE
