This last pattern is complete on paper. Here it is side by side with the previous one. Both of these are designed to work with the 4 cushion 928 seats. They are very difficult to tell part, but I have taken two pictures showing how the large blocks of the pattern will show up centered on the alternate cushions. There is where I think the difference is most obvious. That part of each pattern is between the two rulers.

I think that I mentioned before that the major difference between these last two patterns is that the progression of increasing the sizes of the blocks as they move outward from the center of the small block cluster has to change in order to have the, what I am going to start calling the "box" of the pattern, to end either at the outer edge of a row of blocks versus in the middle of the outer row of largest bloxks. The difference between those two endings either puts two rows of blocks of the same size side by side, which causes the color shift from red/white to white/red, or the outer rim of the pattern box is actually only half of the largest blocks in the box.

One difference that you can see in the pictures above with the rulers on the pattern is how the large blocks play out centered on the alternate cushion section. In one case the largest blocks are in the center of the cushion and in the other the pair of equal size large blocks are in the middle side by side. That doesn't look as bad as I was thinking it would when I decided to draw the last pattern.

But there is one advantage to the previous pattern and that is how the pattern fits at the valley between the cushions. With the previous pattern one of the rows of blocks fits exactly in the bottom of the valley and in the last pattern the bottom of the valley is a bit odd. That would be in the bottom so not particularly noticable, but it kind of bothers me. Here are a couple of pictures of the pattern with the rulers again showing how the bottom of the valley will appear with either pattern. The pictures are in reverse order from that descripotion.

If nothing else, you can appreciate what the original designers went through to make this pattern and perfect it for production into the seats. No wonder these cars were so expensive! This is just for a seat design.

After having my weaves lay around here for now about 3 months and looking at them every time I walk past and then occasionally studying them more carefully I have come to the conclusion that the pattern is not quite correct. What I see is that the pattern as woven looks to me to be too busy in the areas of the small blocks and not busy enough in the areas of the large blocks. Now I can see why. When I derived this pattern I started with three narrow strips in what I consider the middle and then progressively increased the width as they moved out from the center until I got to the end of what that part of the pattern needed to be. This is a double pasha pattern so there are actually two blocks of pattern in each part of the pattern. What I ended up with was the largest blocks at the outer edge of the pattern and that was with the outer edge of the block being at the edge. From that the pattern had to reverse and then start the next block of pattern with another row of large blocks. I see now that that puts too many large blocks in which gives that part of the pattern a too-slow-Joe kind of look. Add to that and the progression of block increase I used was progressive and not linear. The increase in size moving out was greater with each row.

What I am going to have to do is work up a different pattern that has a linear progression for the block increase and then end the pattern block in the middle of the largest block in the pattern rather than at its outer edge. I have found the pattern lay out for that and it is just about perfect both for the look of the pattern and for fitting the five cushion seat design that I previously developed. Here is a picture or two of where I am with it.

Why not take measurements of an original pasha pattern off someone’s seat?

Fair question, except for the fact that this thread has steep history behind it. Jerry actually did just that, back in October 2017 and, as Jerry often does, is creating his own version with his own improvements - see post #28 in the following thread:

As you will note, we have a lot of talent here, including trombonists!

I found this thread searching for pasha patterned leather. Very interesting. I think you’re on the right track with heat activated glue, but I think the way this is done in shoes and apparel is the way to go. Bemis sheet glue is used to assemble shoe uppers and apparel, and is likely the way those singer woven panels are constructed. A heat press takes hand iron and guess work out of the equation. A non stretch substrate would likely keep too much deformation from happening, as would some well placed stitching after assembly (would have to deviate in color for at least part of the pattern if you didn’t restrict it to the tucks in between the cushions). Some of this glue is breathable, and it might work with a breathable substrate like cotton rip stop to keep the seats breathable.

I’d be interested to see your calculations on the drift in the pattern because the weave can’t be perfectly tight, as well as the dimensions of your perfected pattern. If you upload as close to square shots of these as you can make with some measurements, I’ll make vector files for them.

i may experiment with some small tests with the methods I suggest and post some pics.

thanks for the rabbit hole.

Hi Jon. Kind of nice to have some kind of outside input on this project. One thing that I suggest is that you identify how your interest in the Pasha Pattern might relate to the Porsche 928, if at all. The other thing that I suggest is that you take the opportunity to become a Rennlist Member rather than just a User. For me, at least, that tends to add some level of credibility to whatever you might have to say. Otherwise, I tend to see you as kind another big mouth with simply something to say.

This is not a rabbit hole. It is more like a bird's nest. the movement from here is upward, not downwards
