You're right but it just doesn't make any sense. Why would someone go through the ordeal of copying the key and then just drive around for a few days and leave it 5 miles away from my house.

Crime rarely makes sense.
Certainly suspect it was the -day- it left the shop, and there was =no= column/ign damage.
It had a key...who had the keys?
Cops should be having frank discussions with the shop employees.

Unfortunately cops don't do **** in California. My chevy suburban was stolen last year. It was found two weeks later in Long Beach with dirty clothes, muddy boots, shovels and a picture of young women taped to the dashboard - dozens of cigarette butts everywhere. No investigation, they just told me to pick up the car from the tow yard.

That's what happens in the UK with cars that are stolen
Don't know if it's like that in the US.?

Got other more important things to do...

Not that many places make keys by the picture... maybe an inquiry to all of them about what keys they made by pic in the suspected time window (the few weeks at the shop) If you tell your story, and show them your key, you might get a match from one of them...and someone gave them a credit card to get that key made.
I know a DMV officer in CT. Here it is a division of the state police and all they do is auto crimes; thefts, theft rings, fake titles, etc, but also cover dealership and repair shop shenanigans. They would be all over this if you had the paper trail to your key being copied by someone from your repair shop. The regulations on repair shops are no joke here. As an example they just released a massive updated IT standards protocol burden for shops to implement to protect customers' personal data. Every violation poses some threat to the repairer's license. Unauthorized key copying is for only one purpose; intended theft.... and It came from that shop.

You get the police you pay for.
Have not received the same treatment where I live...

Oakland spends 70% of their city budget on police. I'm sure SJ isn't too far behind.

You -get- the police you pay for..
I would say that most communities (taxpayers) in america want a manner of police force..in their minds, but are unwilling to pay for.
That the city spends a lot on police, is a result of the community demanding more than it's willing to pay for...and other services suffer for it.

Glad to hear you got the car back undamaged.

Might not be a bad idea to disable the car somehow until you get new keys/locks - remove the coil, a fuse/relay or some other integral item that thieves won't likely carry around.
Now that they know where you live and if they do indeed have a copy of the key, they may be waiting for the right moment to strike again.
Hate to sound paranoid about these things but the mind of a criminal does not work the way the mind of a law abiding person does.
