Default _O-M-G_ After YEARS, we found my 'running really hot' problem...

So..my car will run to the TOP white line, on an 80 degree day, any warmer, you start marching to the red...been chasing this for years.

WHY??? WTF???

Its all new stuff, everywhere...

So I bit the bullet, moved up the HG job to 'now', because maybe its a **** slipping Laso pump, maybe it's a deteriorated HG, maybe its...a WP vane broken and in a passage...****..who knows...

This service bulletin from many years ago...there's a metal insert inside the inlet of the Behr radiator...it goes in as described, here:

This is what mine looked like:

Not only is the seam NOT centered at about 7-Oclock as it should be, this is ****ing backwards.

My water flow was limited to the small rectangular opening just behind the fingers/gap in the stamping.

Holy ****.

This is what it looks like when properly installed (it just needed flipped)

Now see the new HUGE opening DOWN into the end tank...

About explains this weird behavior since the rad was installed to replace a leaking previous generation AL rad that 928intl used to sell...that drive home from GB's shop was just weird...why's it so "warm" compared to last week??

Well..there you go.

Probly going to run me $6k in labor, $9k in parts (head redone, stuff shop needed that we replaced, and WYAIT stuff like windshield)...for this.

This free fix..and NOTE, that it was a tech that was installing these on 928s when they were a service bulletin, to KNOW to LOOK for this and make sure it was there in the first place.

No..it never got HOOOT, it was just "this is REALLY warm for conditions...never really, on worst days, made it a needle over top white line.

But would near the top white line, on an 80 degree day.

Well, I'll know tomorrow!

Jeff,

You should view this discovery as something that compelled you to do something that you will enjoy for however many years you have left in this world!

On the other hand it never ceases to amaze me how Porsche somehow contrive to concoct things to screw their car owners up!

Yes, the only things on this car with 170k miles, are the chassis and the pistons now.

And Behr...not Porsche...

Three cheers for the simple fix,
I will make sure to inspect these inlets when I do a rad flush.

Thanks for posting

Very very very interesting catch.

is this sleeve fitted to new Behr radiators or they come sleeveless? Wondering before pulling and inspecting the rad hose…

Ya..never heard of this one before.

But now, working on a crank no fuel injector pulse issue.

Jumpered the relay (1987, #12) no change, has spark, has tach movement..

I replaced my behr with a new one like 15 years ago, so wondering if Behr installed it (correctly)… I guess when doing the belt tensioning in a week or so will have the opportunity to check it out. Good call though.

Apparently "sleeve will not insert completely if improperly positioned" isn't exactly true.
Behr somehow managed to do this....

And car runs, the top end is really quiet, quieter than it ever was...just re-plugged in the LH, coding plug...vroom.

Monday noonish, will drive it home...will let it cool, change the breakin oil, put the hood on...

I think you are gonna be very happy with your fresh, new motor. Even if the main problem you were chasing was somewhere else.
