928 86.5 (x3)

( Ok, a GTS would be tempting)
(and so would a 78)

I'm far from expert, or possibly even 'minimal knowledge' about some of those models. But, since this is a 928 Forum, I'll comment about a conversation I had over lunch about 30 years ago at the Porsche Weissach restaurant with Hans Mezger and an associate. I'd never owned a Porsche, and don't buy new 'toy cars', so as conversation, I asked them "If I were to buy a used Porsche, what model should I buy". After a short conversation between them 'auf Deutsche', Hans summarized it in English.

Their TWO choices were: for relatively short drives on twisty roads, a 911 SC like Hans drove OR for longer/high speed trips a 928 like Gerhard drove. Gerhard then said, "I have a ski chalet in Switzerland that is 250 miles away. I drive there in my 928, arrive in less than 2 hours and am relaxed and ski the rest of the day. If Hans tries to follow me in his 911, he will arrive exhausted and have to rest several hours". Hans replied 'Ja Wohl'.

As a result of this conversation, I've only owned S4's and GTS's Not qualified to pick a 3rd.

928 GTS
993 C2

Sell all others, but buy a 996 TT X50 (or S) optioned (mezger motor) as your third choice.

I swear: if I had to sell all of my cars except one….., I would sell everything and keep my 2002 996 TT X50.

absolutely, the most RAW and reliable Porsche I have ever owned in my entire life.

I had a 02 996T. It was rock solid and as reliable as a Toyota Camry. 928 GTS came to me recently so I'm new to shark game.

Really should consider an '89 928 GT for driving enjoyment. 993 of any flavor because they're the coolest of all 911s (IMHO). GTS for investment.

Man, this is encouraging. I own an 89 GT basket case that needs love. I’ve never driven it more than a couple miles… “ran when parked” and currently disassembled motor front end. Been sitting for years half assembled. Will probably call Merlin in on this one eventually as it’s parked in Red Lion Pa.

The first 2 would be the 928's - the GTS and the 78/79. I'd probably go real old school after that with the 911 SC, but honestly, the best 911 made is not on the list - the 997.

Simple.
993 C2S in Speed Yellow. Or....a 993 Twin Turbo (Not an X50) in Speed Yellow.
'78/'79 928 in Continental Orange. Restorod with a 5.8 liter 2 valve engine. With our new suspension and better brakes.
'89 928 GT in almost any color, except black. (Also a restorod with a 5.8 liter 4 valve engine, with our new suspension, modern ABS and better brakes.)

993
78 928
911SC

there's something about a good SC that I prefer over a good 3.2 carrera...but I can't put my finger on it. The SC feels more "70s" .... thats as close as I can get to describing it. I just feels like the "right" displacement for that engine design too.

I've owned a 6 speed 996TT that's a bit flashed and modded into X50 territory for 17 years. Raw.. that is the word. One of the last "obtainable" ($$) and visceral "911" experiences out there. Best buy in a 911 turbo there is, for now.

Nice choices!

This is easy - in order:

993 C2S
928 GTS
993 C2

Who wants to buy my 96 993 C2 6-speed Black/Red so that I can buy a Lexus LC500 Coupe?
