Default Top end re-assembly documentation, part by part?

Hi folks-so I have repaired the seized bolt in the head that was impeding progress on the top end rebuild. I now have the valve covers back on, my full kit from 928srus laid out, and am in theory ready to go.

I stared at this job today, and realized that with the cooling, vacuum, and fuel hoses, a diagram(that ideally correlates part numbers) for each of these would be not only great, but potentially necessary. I feel like I could easily do this job 10 times wrong before doing it all right. Easy example: the coolant hoses that connect to the heater core-which goes to the top nipple? same for the breather hoses for the throttle body, etc etc. I am following Roger's instructions, which are crucial and give me a good "macro plan of attack", but I feel like I could use some detailed instructions on how to do the rubber portion right the first time. Any tips or tricks? Thanks!

People ask me for videos or even just pictures of "how to do....something" on 928's.
People ask me to conduct classes on various aspects of 928 repair.

I've yet to figure out the "upside", for me....
Hell, I can't even create a new product, without two or three people coping the effort.
Even people I've trusted and helped extensively do this.
I can imagine spending the time making a video only to ever sell a couple, but having hundreds of copies of it, out in the world.

So I teach my son what I can and will take the rest to the grave, with a smile on my face.

@Rob Edwards is asking a very pertinent question. I'll add a couple, which may be less so:

- Have you found and followed Dwayne's write up? He's very thorough
- Have you found a copy of PET for your model year? There are mistakes, for sure, and you'll have to jump around a bit between sections, but what's nice is that there are often good dotted lines that tell you where to connect certain hoses.

I hope that doesn't come off as crappy, it's not intended to be so. Sometimes you just need to make sure that the basics have been reviewed.

Good luck

Zirconene has it right. Dave Chamberland also has an excellent writeup for 87-91 S4/GT, and Scott Yoo did a great 86.5 version as well. I used Dave's because Dwayne's was TOO detailed. PET will show some of it.

Also check for images on the web or on Rennlist. Most of the S4 hoses go pretty much where you'd think from the shape. However, stuffing them under the intake without one popping off is an adventure.

Thanks yall. Sorry, the car in question is a 1985 928S auto. As stated, Roger's writeup gets me 80% of the way there, it's incredibly helpful.

@Zirconocene thank you SO much for those leads, the PET file for my year car was EXACTLY what I was hoping for! Those diagrams will be great. I do not know of Dwaynes write up on the project, but I will search around for it.

Between those diagrams, a 2nd writeup, and Roger's set by step instructions, I think I just may have a shot at doing this correctly the first time! Thanks for the tips!

Here's a treasure trove for you. You can find a good top end refresh guide, along with many other great guides, here: http://dwaynesgarage.norcal928.org

Can I ask is your stuff just for your workshop or for the general public to buy. If so I will stop considering your product and look else where. 6 months of trying. I would probably rather not see it advertised then either....because whats the point and the threat of it being copied anyway. Might need to remove this from your signature block. I tried. Sorry for the hijack.

If you could wear a camera on your head all day and live-stream it on-line, that'd be grand! Like refs in NFL games. Just turn it off when you go to the head and whatnot.

You should feel honored that people respect your experience and are asking you for help, after all this is pretty much a DIY forum. The upside is that you get satisfaction from knowing that you have helped others in the community.

I'm aware of the issues. It's completely about available hours.
If someone knows exactly what they want, Mary can deal with it and ship the pieces.
If they have questions that Mary can not answer, there's a breakdown, then.

Which is completely my fault.
In my old age, I can no longer think about 10 things, at the same time.
So, when I'm working in the shop (7 days a week I'm here, doing this) I've found that I need to concentrate on what I'm doing, more than I did a few years ago.
Therefore, Mary doesn't always get the answer she needs, from me.
However, my private Email is very much out in the open (GregBBRD@aol.com).....and Mary gives it to people that can't figure out what they need....several times every single day.
And I read my Email 2-3 times a day.
And try to respond to questions about 928's.

Sorry we failed you.
We're just overwhelmed.
Thanks for considering us, however

Thanks for the help, folks. I'm slowly making progress. Please see the photos attached. I am at the stage where I am wondering if I'm ready to install the intake runners. At the firewall area, I have the heater valve installed, a vacuum nipple on it, and the vacuum line seated. The two "bulkhead" fuel fittings are secured, as are the FPR and rear FD, and the hose clamps secure for the rubber line that feeds the FPR. At the throttle body, the only hose I'm not entirely sure on is the one that is seated on the drivers front side, that now terminates near the DS valve cover. It's somewhat L shaped. I'm pretty confident I've got the rest of the vacuum lines at the throttle body seated correctly. I was hoping someone could put a second set of eyes on these connections, as it seems that once I install the intake runners, access to the throttle body either goes away entirely or gets extremely tough. Also, per Roger's instructions, it does not appear as though gasket sealant is used on the gasket for the intake runners, correct? Thanks for the help!
