Default 79 cambelt tightness help

Hi guys.

Im new to the OB 928:s and I want to check the tension and timing marks of the cambelt but is there a easy way to get the drivers side cover off? Seems both the banjobolt for the powersteering and oilreturn hose to pan needs to come off to get the cover off!?

Advise please

Nope, I presume you have none standard intake tubes with that red cap on the timing cover. Unless it’s glued in place then you can see the timing marks through that hole.

I have the standard intake tubes. The red cap is just there while I work on the car. I can only see the cambelt through that hole while the cover is fitted. I will try to push it aside abit and see if I can se timing marks.

Remove the left cam belt cover bolt
slide the cover forward as far as it will go then look at the back side of the gear to see if the timing marks line up

Here's a shot of the timing indicator pointer and the rear notch in the cam gear lining up at TDC- you should be able to tilt the top of the left timing belt cover far enough forward to see this. (I agree that the '78-79 orientation with the oil drain tube and PS banjo bolt is a little suboptimal...)

Thanks! They line up nice on the car. Tool 9201 says 4,0. Is that ok on a used belt on a -79? Cant find correct tension info for a -79.

That's a little loose, spec for the 16V cars is 4.5 belt units on the 9201 (page 15-18c of the WSM)

I have a flexible shield that goes over the top of the alternator and just remove the banjo bolt.

...Gives me a chance to get rid of 60% of the 20-40 year old black (should be red) power steering fluid (Dextron.)

Sounds like a smart cover. I managed to see the marks so fine for now.
Changing to new powersteering hoses and new fluid is on the agenda. PO has taken good care of the car servicewise so PS fluid looks great.
