Default Racing the 928 2022

The car is still running and going through adjustments to find the handling it once had before the shocks were revalved , its close , but not there. New tires seemed to be a good and expensive bandaid, but the car still is a blast to drive and im still trying to race it for a quarter of the SCCA race season and hit any high profile club races if they come to town or are LA. (Run Offs championships, or vintage race events)

I have a season worth some of the best used tires ive ever seen..... and most of you know, ive been a big user of take offs , especially from the pro teams.. i found a couple that go through tires , and these are not any tires, but yokohama slicks, in a brand new size ..... this is a great tire (slick) but lasts a long time and good to the cords, and better than any used hoosier you will ever try. I have several sets but can part with a couple of them if any one is interested. ill post a separate post about them shortly. they are off the latest cup car which is the 991 and they use 300x650x18 fronts which are almost identifcal to a 315x35x18 hoosier in size. its new by yokohama this season and much better than the 300 series from Michelin which are almost an inch narrower (some of you noticed in my pictures from behind at the runnoffs... narrow is no good!) anyway, check out the new post and let know if you want to buy a set from me as i will be reselling them through out the season.

should be at Laguna first part of may and in june as well. dont think ill make the Tribute race at Willow Springs , unless there is some other 928ers going out to race.

hope all of you are doing well. BTW, it would be nice to post here in the forum... Ive been restricted for many years now, and still enjoy interacting and providing help where i can.... if you need help with anything, you can always PM me until restrictions are lifted here.
Thanks all,

Mark

I was thinking about you and used tires, when I was at Thermal. Their area of used tires,, neatly wrapped up in huge bundles is overwhelming..

And one of the things that is immediately obvious is that the very rich, who fly in on their private jets/helicopters to play with their race cars are playing on brand new tires.

There's a treasure trove sitting there, for the used race tire guys!

yes there is, and when you find one, its like a treasure trove... a couple of these teams go though 30 or 40 sets in a season... its crazy... have you seen the cost of these tires per set? this makes the cost of a of one of your strokers, look like a racing budget rounding error! but, they do have an expiration date... if they sit in the sun for just more than a few days, they spoil. i have a few sets now.... wrapped up neatly in a couple garages, so maybe ill venture out to Willow to cord a few passenger front tires soon! hope all is well!

Excepting for the history of those tyres!
The differences, between used and new is vast , When one of the used ones delaminates at high speed , you will appreciate the new ones from a different perspective if you survive..

What about your bushings......ALL of them from the suspension arms to the shock tops? Definitely worth a look-inspection, probably refresh a few would be a massive improvement in stability. I do believe one of the reasons Casper handled so well was the heim joint shock mounts. However I never inspected the bushings on the arms, they "looked" fine and I liked the way the car felt? But many have taken on this refresh on street cars and say its a HUGE improvement!

HUGE is an understatement.
Completely different car is a better description.
The cars go from feeling heavy and lazy to nimble with a far lighter feeling.

Mr. Brown is speaking the truth right there.

I need to find the article, but there was a writer, who wrote about car stuff.
And he needed to make a road trip.
And his boss insisted that he take his 928 on the trip...just to see how "wonderful" it was.

The writer hated the 928.
Said it just felt heavy and sluggish, through the corners.
I had to laugh (out loud) and think, that if they only put some fresh rubber in the suspension, installed some decent shocks, and had a high quality alignment done....that story would have been completely different.
Intelligent people who drive 35 year old cars, with original suspension pieces, should know better than to judge the car's handling.
Definitely not the "sharpest stick in the shed" to even say anything about that!

If anyone knows the article I'm referring to, please post a link....it could take me a week to find it!

Funny, I was thinking of an exact opposite article from Road & Track a few years ago. One of their editors bought an 80's or early 90's Mercedes & immediately updated all the rubber bits, suspension, and tires and wrote about how it transformed the car.

It's such a common mistake people make though, all through the years I hear over and over about driving ones dream car and being so disappointed in how old cars handle / ride so bad. The vast majority of the time it's an "all original" example with everything worn out. Now go drive a properly updated and restored mid-year Corvette. As tight as a drum, handles like a dream and rides perfect. But most folks have never driven one that nice, because it costs a LOT of money to do this work (yes, even on a Chevy).

Somewhere deep in youtube land is a nice video on a Countach restoration, not even a high mileage car and all the heim joints in the suspension were worn out (no rubber on those cars). Anyone who drove that car prior to the restoration walked away thinking they all handle that bad.

bushings seems fine.... again, remember nothing changed since the runoffs , where the car ran some pretty stout times ...... but when it went to laguna, the times were well off pace. could it be track and all my competitors are just faster now (as the equipment is just getting better) or is it the shocks. the car still feels darty and nimble.... the problem it is loose on corner exits (more than it should be) this next race weekend will tell a lot . should have run today with SCCA, but figured with all i got going on , i would shoot for July 1st at laguna.. got a new set of PFC 11 pads on.... just bedded them last weekend using the tips ive been providing everyone on the rennlist, as it works so well. and im thinking to turn the shocks full soft on all corners and see how the car feels in practice. i just dont get enough time to really test. so, probably not a good idea to change too much. maybe just leave it as is.... use the new'ish yoko slicks and see how the car does.

by the way, if anyone is interested and is racing, especially at Willow springs... i have an almost unlimited supply of the brand new size, the 300x650x18. I also have access to the 280x650x18 which is very closer to the 275x35x18 we all use on the 9.5" 928 custom rims, and the 300s are like the 315x30x18 as we use on the 11" width rims. let me know. the reason i mention willow springs , is that when you spend a weekend there, you basically trash the inside edge of the passenger front tire.

Also, let me know if any 928s are racing this season at willow springs or autoclub, etc.... ill meet you out there and get a weekend in so you got some 928 company!

Mk
