Struggling with installing drive shaft
I'm working on my '78 five-speed having replaced the torque tube bearings. I also dropped the clutch and inspected and lubricated everything and have it put back in place. The front coupler is not lining up with the slots in both the drive shaft and stub shaft at the same time. There is almost exactly a half inch between the two shafts at this point when the stub shaft is pushed all the way forward. The engine turns over easily enough by hand. Is it possible that the stub shaft is not in the pilot bearing? I've tried jiggling it around a bit but it doesn't move side to side much just in and out.

I should add the rear coupler is lined up and bolted

Solved
This way having been able to work up the clutch all around the stub shaft was not in the pilot bearing and wouldn't jiggle in. I loosened the clutch up and then the stub shaft entered the pilot bear.

Make sure the stub shaft is not bottomed out into the pilot bearing it should be pulled back about 3 mm

Stan - how can you see that end to measure it?

This is done before you install the clutch put the guide tube and stub shaft seat the stub shaft in the pilot bearing and pull it back about 3 mm so that the sweet spot of the tip is centered in the bearing mark the backside of the guidetube collar on the stub shaft and that will give you an indication that the stub shaft is now centered and then when you put the assembly together simply learn the mark up to the rear of the guy tube and you will be set

I am having the same problem...When I got done re reading my post the computer suggested I read your post . So, just loosen all the clutch pressure plate to flywheel bolts, and the front shaft will pop into the pilot bearing? Let's hope so! I'll give it a try.

I had the same problem, and i loosened the clutch PP bolts with some bent nails in there and the front drive shaft slid right into place with a gentle pry. That was a royal pain because the coupler just would not go on because the distance was wrong, but thanks for the help...
